One of the original Cinque Ports, Hythe was chosen by Edward the Confesssor to protect the English coast from invasion in exchange for a cut of the legal fees. As a natural consequence, this ushered in a period of unprecedented prosperity for these settlements, the fruits of which are still visible to this day in Hythe and other towns of similar size. The Royal Military Canal cuts straight through the heart of town. During the Napoleonic period, this was dug to protect against an invasion from France.
