Our celebrated sea side home, surrounded by 12km of pristine beach, is situated in a traditional "coloured" fishing village 10 km from the "whale-capital" Hermanus. It nestles in a succulent-filled oasis surrounded by fynbos-filled mountains. Our pets - two dogs and two cats - make our life here even more beautiful. When we first stayed in this place two years ago - as guests back then - we instantly had a feeling of home. A home away from home where we can relax and restore our soul and senses. This house, which has featured in local design magazines, is an unusual modern villa set in a small indigenous and vegetable garden with fynbos and cacti. I can see the ocean and the sunset from my desk upstairs. To get to the beach we only have to cross the parking lot. The beach is about 12km long, and stretches from Hawston to Kleinmond. The upper floor, which sleeps two, and has its own kitchen and bathroom, is completely independent and self sufficient, with magnificent views of the sea and mountain and an outside verandah area. Our daughter likes to sleep on a separate mattress on the couch in this room. Downstairs, the main house consists of a general living area with a large kitchen, a bathroom with shower and a sitting room with a sunken pit where two extra people can sleep if there are 8 guests staying. It's also possible to sleep on the day beds or the couches. There is an outside verandah area leading into the garden with a central fireplace on the ground with seating for 8 people to enjoy a barbecue or a night round the fire under the stars. The two downstairs bedrooms, one with en-suite bathroom, are accessed via the verandah and have their own chill yard with an outside day bed under partial covering. Cosmas, who can help with any questions, lives with his family in a separate home on the premises. In 2023 we had a solar plant installed which not only makes the house more eco-friendly but also means that we are not affected by load shedding (scheduled power outages throughout SA). There is a local public 50m pool right opposite us which opens November to April. It is a two minute walk across the parking lot to the magnificent Hawston beach. You can also hike the coastal walk which stretches 8km through the nature reserve to Vermont.
