The original old cottage has been lovingly restored and extended. Contemporary design blends with the original features of wooden beams and exposed walls. It is situated in the friendly village of Salir do Porto - just five minutes drive from the lively seaside town Sao Martinho do Porto. The location gives our guests the best of both worlds - a taste of real Portugal , tucked away from the tourist scene but within easy reach of the beach, clifftop walks, cafes, bars, restaurants & shops. There is a well equipped kitchen diner which leads into the living room with a small study. The sun room overlooks the garden and pool with views reaching over the valley to the distant hills of the national park. Both living areas have wood burning stoves. (for winter bookings, we will provide a starter supply of logs & firelighters, wood is available at supermarkets for top up if necessary) There are 3 bedrooms and bathrooms. The bedroom on the ground floor is opposite the bathroom, it has twin beds. Upstairs is the romantic loft bedroom with ensuite facilities and walk in wardrobe. The third bedroom is in the detached annexe cottage overlooking the deck and pool. It has ensuite facilities & kitchenette. The garden is landscaped with flowerbeds around the lawn, newly rendered plunge pool & deck areas. There is a patio area ideal for el fresco dining plus a barbeque and off road parking .

Very nice place
Procurávamos uma casa para relaxar uns dias em família e a Casa das Papoilas ultrapassou as nossas expectativas, a começar pelo acolhimento dos anfitriões (obrigada, Karen e Lars, pela vossa simpatia e sugestões). A casa é bonita, limpa e espaçosa e fica situada numa zona muito sossegada. O espaço exterior, em particular a zona da piscina, é tão agradável que nos impediu de ir à praia mais vezes. Foram umas férias bem passadas!
Accueil très chaleureux de Karen et Lars. La maison est agréable, spacieuse. La chambre du haut manque d'intimité (pas de porte), le point noir est la cuisine qui est vieillotte, mal équipée, lave-vaisselle trop petit, présence de souris. De nombreux chiens dans le voisinage
La maison est agréable et confortable. Tout était à proximité de la maison. Le quartier est très calme ce qui a rendu notre séjour très agréable. Merci à Karen et Lars pour leur accueil!

Salir do Porto is a small village just 5 minutes drive from Sao Martinho do Porto the lively coastal town.
It has the charm of an old Portuguese village ... daily hooting announces the arrival of the breadseller, fishmonger and vegetable van right on your doorstep!
Within walking distance from the cottage you will find cafes, restaurants, bars and a supermarket in the village centre. The nearest bar/restaurant, Naco na Pedra is just 400metres. It's open every day & has a good menu to choose from. It also hosts special evenings with local muscians, wine tasting, etc. Just up the road you'll find walking and cycling tracks with stunning views along the coasttline.
The beach has a giant sand dune which kids large & small love to climb! The reward at the top is the stunning view over the bay of Sao Martinho! There are walking trails through the sand dunes and some great picnic spots.Take a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk or beach from Salir to Sao Martinho. The dunes along the riverside are a popular spot for birdwatchers.
In Sao Martinho do Porto you will find a lively centre with lots of shops,bars, cafes and restaurants. There's a daily market and a large supermarket.There's even a small British grocery store stocking lots of goodies from the UK!
Sit on the harbour side and enjoy some delicious piri piri chicken or freshly grilled fish. Or explore the old town of Sao Martinho - it's a steep climb though narrow cobbled streets (or you can take an elevator from the tourist centre)
Sao Martinho has rail and bus services, petrol stations, pharmacy and banking services. There is a tourist information centre, cultural centre and newsagencies selling foreign newspapers.
We advise our guests to rent a car to make the most of their vacation. However, there is a bus and train service from São Martinho. Taxis available from the cottage to bus/rail stations. Timetables & taxi contact numbers in our guestbook.

We retired to Portugal in 2006 and really enjoy life here with our 2 horses, dogs and chickens. We live just ten minutes away from the holiday cottage in Salir do Porto, so usually available if any help is required. We know a lot about the region, places of interest, the best beaches, restaurants, what's going on etc and always happy to advise and give recommendations. We meet and greet our guests in person whenever possible, usually with a bottle of wine! One of the best things about holiday rentals are the people we get to meet along the way...
