ONWARD!!!!!! ************************* Step into the Dome and be mesmerized by the 30 feet curved ceiling and the gorgeous sunlight streaming in through the Dome’s gigantic triangular windows. The Dome was built from a home starter kit in the 1970s and has been lovingly owned and refurbished ever since. Modeled after Buckminster Fuller’s ingenious geodesic dome design, the Dome is crafted off triangular structures that maximize the home’s strength while using less materials. In the spirit of protecting our wildlife and planet, the Dome is 100% electric and includes an induction stove, heat pump, EV charger, energy-efficient fans, and water-saving toilets. The Dome also has 100% organic cotton linens. Our kitchen is large and well-equipped for those who love to cook and bake (as well as is meticulously labeled because we know how confusing anything but your own kitchen can be). For the coffee fanatics, we have an extensive coffee bar for the diversified barista: espresso, drip, Chemex, pour-over, and French press. The kitchen boasts a new induction stove, spices and sauces from both western and eastern cultures, and handmade stoneware pottery and accents from the owners’ family. Don’t forget to open up the “Delightful Appliances” cabinet, where you’ll find everything from rice cookers to a popcorn maker and ice shaver machine. The main floor also features a 54 inch TV linked to Roku, a Bluetooth/stereo system (the Dome's acoustics are so funky that you can’t tell where sound is originating from), and yoga mats and weights (doing sun salutations in the morning streaming sun is a must!). The Dome is generously spacious for six people. It has three bedrooms all with queen beds and a loft with a twin bed, and two full bathrooms and a half bath. The rooms are like, as someone described, entering a rocket ship--skylight windows dance across the slanted Dome walls. The first floor bedroom is an ensuite bedroom with a private bathroom. The second floor houses two bedrooms. The second-floor large bedroom is one of the best places in the Dome to savor a full moon and original abstract art from local Colorado artists. It also is the secret entryway into an upstairs loft, which doubles as a game room stocked with a 100+ Nintendo game system and a daycouch that can also be a twin bed. Don’t forget to peep out the window of the loft: this is the money shot of the Dome where you are at the closest point to the Dome’s apex and can marvel at the 30 ft below you in this architectural gem. You’ll also find the luxury master bathroom on the main floor, with a spa shower and bathtub, as well as a spectacular gunbarrel stock wood live-edged counter and metal fixtures, all cut and self-welded by the Dome’s pervious owners. The back of the luxury bathroom also holds our spacious laundry room, with a laundry machine, dryer, and drying lines. From the stunning wrap-around deck outside, you’ll often be able to see herds of elk come to graze and rest on the Dome’s front lawn. Bears, wild turkeys, rabbits, foxes, deer, Stellar blue jays, and broad-tailed hummingbirds in the summer grace the Dome’s premises. And don’t be afraid if you happen to sneak a peek of our (non-poisonous) garter snake Gary and his family who live in the red-rocked garden area in front of the Dome; they sometimes come out in the morning sun to get a bit of sun-tanning before heading back into the stone crevices. The Dome sits on five beautifully forested acres in Muggins Gulch, famous for being the home of Rocky Mountain Jim, the one-eyed rebel rouser and an early mountain guide of Estes Park who famously won the heart of Lady Isabella Bird, an erudite English lady who traversed the United States in search of adventure in the late 1800s. The best restaurant in town (Bird and Jim) is named after their elusive love affair. (You can find Lady Bird’s diaries of Jim and Estes Park in our second floor library.) The Dome is 20 minutes from the National Park's Beaver Meadows entrance and Lumpy Ridge, and 10 minutes from downtown Estes Park. It’s a 1:15 trip from Denver and 40 min trip to Boulder. If you love the whimsical and the radder side of life, the iconic Dome of Estes Park is for you!
Staying at the snow globe Airbnb was a delightful experience. The kitchen was impressively well-equipped, making cooking a breeze. Additionally, we appreciated the thoughtful local recommendations provided by the host. We really enjoyed hiking close by. Thank you
The dome was exactly what we were looking for! My friends and I came up here for a reading retreat, and it was perfect for that. Watching the snow while we read and enjoyed some great coffee from the abundance of appliance options was fantastic. Jean was SUPER responsive when we had an issue, which was very quickly resolved. Will likely stay here again when we plan this again for next year.
Our home is conveniently located off Highway 36 about 10 minutes from downtown Estes Park, 20 minutes from the National Park's Beaver Meadows entrance and Lumpy Ridge. There is great local hiking nearby, particularly in Hermit Park, where you can hike or bike to the old Homestead Meadows and see the original cabins that were inhabited back in the 1800s.
You'll need a car, and AWD/4WD in the winters.
