A trip to the Maritime Museum followed by some lunch while watching the water lazily lap against the quayside can quickly fill an afternoon, such is the hypnotic quality of the sleepy Devon coast. An inviting open-plan kitchen/lounge centres on the ground floor, as full of kitsch details and curiosities as Appledore itself. Painted exposed beams and a wood burner add heaps of cottage charm. Connecting to this room is the dining conservatory, with access to the external decked area. Evenings can be spent enjoying wine and crackers on comfortable sofas by the TV and wood burner, or perhaps spread across the conservatory and outdoor dining table. Bideford can be found 4 miles in the opposite direction, home to museums, shops and restaurants, as well as boat trips to the local treasure that is Lundy Island.
