You’ll find a flight amenity kit from one of our First Class trips on Delta/SkyTeam in the bedrooms, and the brand of earplugs and sleep masks I use in First available. Why pay for someplace else and risk a poor night’s sleep? Downtown Chicago (South Loop / Magnificent Mile) is 10-25 minutes via car/Uber/Lyft (depending on traffic), plentiful public transit is nearby. Read on for more detailed info. In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, we regularly sanitized & disinfected the property. Some urfaces have been sprayed with soap and water and left to dry for soap’s disinfectant effect. Windows and surfaces may be cloudy and spotted rather than clear, in order to preserve sanitation. We purchased just under 2 years ago and have been slowly restoring this house to its early 20th century appearance -- a bit of a labour of love, a bit of an educational project. Rather than a renovation, we are slowly peeling off layers of past changes to reveal and restore original hardwoods and other features. Our intent is to provide the experience of the 1920s or 1930s combined with necessary current amenities (WiFi, high-power USB plugs, refrigeration!). Moving boxes are mostly long gone, and we listed after much work, but there is still much to be done. Please see photos to get an idea of current condition. Original hardwood floors were covered with layers of latex paint which proved time-consuming to remove; it is currently mostly gone, but upstairs floors are unsealed and still have paint seeped in, still in the process of removal. We are restoring edging and trim and masking tape remains in many places. Generally we try to keep any restoration messes to a minimum and out of your way-- but if you have time & interest, we can provide 30-90 minutes of things like training in paint removal with infrared and other technology (“your personal episode of ‘This Old House’), and plan to offer short tours of the House as an Airbnb Experience. The House is also part of a larger educational project, described below. If you have limited or are charged for cellular data, we can provide a temporary password for Comcast / xfinitywifi public Wifi points in Chicago if you ask in advance. There is video security covering outdoor and some public indoor areas. We are in a relatively quiet, renewing/improving, familyish neighborhood-- we are sometimes up late, usually to get work projects completed! and attempt to be respectful of your schedule and need for quiet / rest / privacy. The West Woodlawn section of Hyde Park is the focus of several urban renewal projects, concurrent with the Obama Presidential Library just to the east. Sunshine Enterprises and Greenline Coffee, at the corner of 61st and Eberhardt, have been centers of those efforts-- the block we are on, the first of a model now expanding to twelve surrounding blocks. The Lorraine Hansberry House, featured in the play “A Raisin in the Sun” (and the Supreme Court case) is centered, is just across and down the street. Finally, the House is the first of The Dikē Project. Along with the Arete Project and Thoreau College, we seek to use experiential education based on the Deep Springs College model to provide alternative college experiences, as well as service opportunities that improve the local community. In addition to local staffing, 5% of gains are reinvested in Deep Springs and local nonprofits.
West Woodlawn is a neighborhood in the southwest of the Hyde Park township which surrounds the University of Chicago, currently the center of major urban renewal connected to the siting of the Obama Library.
Directly south of Washington Park, one of only four surviving Daniel Burnham parks in the United States, this area was a historical endpoint during the Great Migration, and has been a predominantly African-American neighborhood since the events of 1968.
Temperatures run cold in the winter, occasionally hot in the summer. As the area is rapidly revitalizing, there are many amenities nearby, including a cafe and community development center at 61st and Eberhardt, squash courts and learning center a block and a half to the east on 61st, UChicago’s new arts center approx. 3 blocks away on 60th, and a Jewels now coming to 63rd. The DuSable Museum of African-American History is a 20 minute walk through Washington Park. Please see our neighborhood guide attached to our primary listing for more amenities.
A LONGER NOTE ON SAFETY
Many people ask: standard safety rules for any big city applies, especially if you are unfamiliar. The Hyde Park / Woodlawn area now has a very low crime rate in comparison to most of Chicago and other US cities. Keep reading if you are concerned:
The most general rules of thumb I might offer to those with concerns, are to avoid the area directly west of Washington Park during late-night hours, use the Cottage Grove station rather than King Drive, and (if truly concerned) remain above 63rd Ave and east of King Drive. (Keep reading for more detailed info).
There are notable changes of character at approximately south of 63rd, and more seriously, below 71st. Significant gang activity is further south of 71st. West of King Drive (approx. 3 blocks west) is generally safe, but there are small pockets that have seen violent incidents in the past two years. (Specifically, the Mercantile Exchange and locations along Garfield Blvd).
If you are concerned, I'd recommend avoiding the Green line stops at King Drive, Garfield and 51st out of caution, especially more than a few hours after dark or late at night; Red line stops are fine. Please message me if you have concerns, or want more specific information on the areas west of Washington Park or south of 63rd/67th.
Ending summary: overall crime in these areas is better than much of Brooklyn, Nashville or Oakland, but there are pockets of activity you may wish to be aware of and exercise caution around. It’s really not a big deal, but if you haven’t developed urban street sense, generally stay east of King Drive and north of 63rd -- except to take the bus down to Aldi’s, of course!
Go ogle's Maps now usually provides very accurate, up-to-date transit information and routing in Chicago, as well as quick links to Uber and Lyft if needed. This is probably the best way to know how to get to any destination in the Chicago area.
We are within two blocks to Green Line (Chicago's CTA "L" elevated subway) stations (Cottage Grove recommended) ; there are westward bus routes to the Red Line north and south of us on 61st and 63rd; Metra, South Shore and other commuter railroad stations are under a mile east; there plenty of other buses; Uber and Lyft plentiful and very cheap, often around $3-5 for UberPools within Hyde Park.
Finally, there is a Divvy bikeshare system station at 61st and Eberhardt, approx. a block away.
自我介绍
Greetings! Currently volunteering in Ukraine, your support is appreciated. I have been hosting on Airbnb since 2012, a time in which I’ve had more than 500 guests and stayed in over 250 Airbnbs in 44 countries. Philosophy: have anything I’ve needed after landing at 11pm available to you -- from coffee to cereal & soup to wireless fast chargers -- and to incorporate the best of ABBs I’ve stayed in worldwide. And make sure you have good sleep: only a handful of Airbnbs I’ve stayed in, have beds as comfortable as ours-- earplugs and sleep masks nearby. Professionally, I am variously trained as a Rhetoritician (Cal: Butler, Dolan, Pred), retooled as a software engineer (AI), later retooled as an economist via on-the-job training.
