Melaka · 整套民居 · 1室2床1.0卫 · 可住5人 · LEJU 79 樂居 | Heritage house in a quiet old street
LEJU 79 is a 2 storeys prewar shophouse located in a historical alley , Jalan Hang Kasturi ( 2nd cross street), which is about 2-3 min walk to Jonker area. Even though it is very near to the tourists attractions, but it is one of the peaceful and quiet old street in the UNESCO site. In addition to being lined with many attractions as Jonker Street and Heeren Street, Jalan Hang Kasturi also one of the few places where artisans still practice their trades in shops set up by their ancestors. LEJU 79 was formerly a residential house by several group of local residents. It has a special charm that you cant find anywhere else. It is located in a quiet neighbourhood within the world heritage side. When we took over, it was still in a good condition despite it had more than a century history. We tried to preserve it, and maintain the original structure of it as much as we can. The major renovation is at the rear end of the shophouse ( air well area ), we rebuilt the bathroom to make it more spacious with brand new bathrooms appliances. All the structures in the house are still remained unchanged ,further completed with the vintage/ furnitures. This space is best suited for those travellers who appreciate its quirk and looking for some unique travel experiences in Malacca. ✔︎ Ground floor front part-living room with 50s sofa chair , 70s vintage work desk with chair, some books, an android TV with Netflix & Youtube channels . ✔︎ Ground floor rear part- air well with newly built ventilated bricks for air circulation, a dining table , an abandoned bath tub ( we had transformed it to a Koi fish pond ), kitchen area with fridge, microwave, kettle, water dispenser ( can consume directly), a newly built bathroom , washing machines with detergent, iron & ironing board , clothes rack with hangers etc. There is an original wooden staircases leading up to 1st floor.. ✔︎ 1st floor with 2 queen size beds, a rear balcony with clothes drying rack, two windows facing the local street and airwell area respectively.
Sentimental meets zen in this townhouse where we had a chance to relive the 60s charm, yet with a spotlessly clean and spacious inner deco. We would’ve happily stayed a few more days if we could. Zanne, thank you for your accommodation which helped make our stay possible. We would love to visit again some day!
We loved our stay here! The deco was interesting and the house is beautifully restored. The only tiny minute issue was that there were some ants in the bathroom, but we guess, it's all part of nature. The house was clean and the neighbourhood is very quiet at night. Located in Jonker, it's convenient to drop our shoppings / go back to chill before going out in the hot sun again. Just to note that the free gated parking area is a 5-10min stroll away, near 'Something Bakery', but it's non-issue for us since we could always do with a morning/evening stroll.
We absolutely enjoyed our stay at this heritage home in Melaka. The traditional house has been beautifully renovated and is in a fantastic location. The amenities provided exceeded our expectations. The location was perfect, allowing us to easily walk to Jonker Street and explore the town with ease. T Zanne is incredibly helpful and accommodating. She even allowed us to check in earlier than our scheduled time, which was greatly appreciated as we arrived in Malacca early. We highly recommend this place to others looking to experience Melaka. The apartment was cozy, spacious, and situated right in the center of town, making it convenient to access all the main attractions. We would definitely stay here again on our next visit to Melaka.
If you are looking for an ancient street with fascinating sights, sounds and smells, this is it.
Jalan Hang Kasturi, or Second Cross Street as the older locals in Malacca know it, begins from Jalan Kampung Pantai, intersects with Jalan Tukang Emas (Goldsmith Street) and cuts across Malacca’s two main tourist draws — Jonker Street (Jalan Hang Jebat) and Heeren Street (Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock).
With the ever-rising value of properties in the old city under the Unesco- designated World Heritage status, many traditional family businesses have been forced to move elsewhere or close down.
In spite of this, Second Cross Street has managed to retain its allure.
In between the shops of old are guest houses and budget hotels catering to backpackers, cafes, hawker stalls, restaurants and an array of gift shops selling items ranging from painted clogs to priceless antiques.
The first thing that grabs the attention as one enters Jalan Hang Kasturi from the Jalan Kampung Pantai junction, is a mural of eight running horses painted on a wall of a building.
That stretch of Jalan Hang Kasturi is also known to locals as “Tofu Street” because of the stalls selling tofu-based snacks and other delicious hawker fare in the area at night during weekends.
During the 18th century, tinsmiths dominated this end of Second Cross Street. Most were Hakkas who arrived from villages near Canton (Guangdong).
It was a thriving trade in the days when almost everything was made by artisans using bare hands and simple tools.
In addition to a wide variety of kitchen utensils, they also made galvanised iron rain gutters for roofs of houses. There are now only a handful of them left on the street.

Jalan Hang Kasturi
