We had a magical stay at Casa Raposa. My husband and I were traveling with our 4 y.o. son, and immediately felt welcomed upon arrival. The house was immaculate, inviting, stylish w/ cohesive choices that made it feel beach chic, while also being family-friendly. You can feel the passion and heart she puts in every detaiI. It was filled w/ everything you would need for your stay. A fully stocked kitchen w/beautiful cookware, sharp knives, kids dish sets, oils + spices. Lucinda even left us milk, butter, fresh loaf of bread, a bottle of wine and a welcome basket of snacks that was much appreciated. The beds were very comfortable, so much so that our kiddo slept through the nights in his bunk bed without ever wanting to climb in bed with us. 🤩 She provided plenty of extra pillows + blankets, towels for both bath and beach, games for family fun, smart TV, and fast WiFi! The location is PERFECT + her insider recs are the best. Overall, our experience was 10+ stars! Can't wait to go back!
Lucinda’s place was stylish and comfortable. She was very pleasant to deal with, and she provided lots of information about the area. The beach in Salema is beautiful, so if you’re looking for some extreme relaxation, this is the place!
We loved our stay in Salema! The cottage is small but perfectly formed, in an amazing location about 2 mins from the beach. It's beautifully decorated and a very zen place to spend time. There are a surprising number of great restaurants in Salema - all walkable - but the real jewel is the beach which is right on the doorstep. We had a spectacular hike along the headland to nearby beaches too. The weather was a bit mixed for our stay, so we appreciated the wood burner and cosy interiors. The only thing we'd change is the challenge of drying anything (towels, clothes, etc) but suspect that's not a prob when it's less rainy! Host was amazing and super responsive.
We had a great time at Lucy’s cosy fisherman’s cottage. Steps from the beach and great restaurants. Would have no problem recommending this lovely spot. Lucy was easy to communicate with and very responsive. We will definitely be back !
Beautiful seaside Salema on the western Algarve is one of Portugal's best kept secrets....an utterly charming village with a white-sand beach and some of the best restaurants on the Algarve. It's also situated within an unspoilt Natural Park. Salema is 100km (a 1 hour drive) from Faro airport.
Salema also happens to be the famous American travel writer, Rick Steves' favourite place in Europe. Rick Steves is known as ‘America’s leading authority on European travel’ and has been coming to Salema since the 1970s.
Salema is one of the last-remaining authentic fishing villages on the Algarve. With it's wide, protected white-sand beach and it's clutch of fabulous restaurants, the village is being recognised as an undiscovered "gem"; totally different from the over-developed resorts at Eastern end of the Algarve.
The village also boasts some of the best RESTAURANTS on the Algarve and some great little bars - its narrow cobbled backstreet is buzzing with life in the evenings and people are coming from all over to eat here...quite an achievement for this unspoilt, unpretentious little village.
The stunning white-sand beach forms a long, curved bay, largely protected from big waves, making it very popular with families. There are SUP boards and kayaks for hire, plus dolphin boat rides.
Salema has a well-stocked mini-supermarket. There is also a large supermarket (Interemarche) just a 5 minute drive away which stocks many food items from around Europe.
There are farmers markets:
1) Lagos, beside bus station (weekend mornings)
2) Vila do Bispo: in market building behind the Café Zig Zag. 09:00-13:00.
Within 5 minutes drive, you come across some of the most unspoilt, off-the-beaten track beaches on the Algarve. But if you're looking to totally unwind and not move around, you really don't need to venture further than the village itself. We can guarantee you won't want to leave this beautiful corner of Portugal.
One of the joys of Casa Raposa is its position; it's on a peaceful cobbled street but just a 2 minute walk to the village centre. So back home, you feel far-removed from the buzz of the village. Crack open a bottle of Vinho Verde and settle yourself outside listening to the waves.
For those keen on golf, Golfe San Antonio resort is right on your doorstep; a 4 minute drive away. The resort (formerly known as Parque da Floresta) has an 18 hole golf course, driving range, tennis courts, spa, sauna & gym. There are 3 other golf courses nearby too: Boa Vista, Espiche and Palmares.
For most people, Salema's stunning beach (which has earned "blue flag" status, acknowledging it as one of the cleanest beaches in Europe) is enough to keep a family happy throughout their holiday. But for those keen to explore further afield, there are plenty of off-the-beaten-track beaches right on your doorstep.
Keen surfers are also just a short drive from some of the most sought-after surf beaches in Europe. The utterly breathtaking surfing Meccas of Carrapateira and Armado are 20 minutes up the West Coast.
There are plenty of good surf schools locally if you fancy giving it a go!
In the same direction as the surf beaches, you'll come across the historic town of Sagres, right on the corner of Portugal; the westernmost point in mainland Europe, thought to be the "End of the World" until America was discovered. It was here that Henry the Navigator set up a nautical school; it has a lighthouse, an ancient fort and a pretty church to explore. So it's not just that delicious amber nectar that Sagres is famed for!
To the east of Salema you find the historic town of Lagos with its delightful winding street. From here you can take a fishing trip or go dolphin and whale watching. The headland around Lagos is dotted with stunning quirky grottos which you can explore by boat or kayak from beside the sailing school.
The winding streets of Lagos provide a buzzing retail centre with lots of restaurants and bars, a historic slave market, a museum, a cinema and a marina.
For younger children, Lagos boasts a particularly special zoo with no huge animals but plenty of strange and beautiful creatures. The animals are immaculately looked after in a delightful wooded park with a large lake island packed with monkeys. The zoo even allow you to bring bikes and scooters!
For the sure-footed, there are lovely, wild coastal walks straight from the village. For those staying, we have a personalised guide to all the local walks.
And if you've had enough sea air, Monchique mountain is 45 minutes away; well worth a visit if you feel like a long, picturesque drive with plenty of restaurants and cafes along the way.
From someone who has spent my life travelling the world, all we can say is that Salema ticked every box for us. We still continue to travel but our heart and soul is here in Salema. It really is one of the most special places in the world.
Look up "Rick Steves Salema" and see what he has to say about this little gem...but don't tell everyone!
There are tourist mini bus shuttles you can book in advance to bring you to Salema from FARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (100km away)
The best way to get to Salema though is to hire a car as there’s so much to explore locally, specially all the stunning local beaches. Parking is completely FREE everywhere in Salema.
Driving directly to the house is up a very narrow street so you can either park in the village centre and walk the 4 minutes up the hill to the house. Or you can drive up the narrow street, park temporarily behind the house while you unload your bags, then continue up the hill and park on the right hand side at the very top. From there it’s a 2-3 minute walk back down to the house.
I will send you comprehensive driving instructions when you book.
Please note: there is no direct parking outside the cottage
