Welcome to Shy Beaver Den! This chalet-style cabin in the southern Maine Lakes Region is less than 2 hours from Boston and less than an hour from Portland. The four-season cabin offers peace and privacy, with views of a tranquil pond surrounded by a nature preserve. Trails for walking, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Water access just down the driveway. Listen to the loons as you relax by the firepit, gaze at the stars from the deck, or fire up the woodstove for cozy nights in. The main living area features high ceilings, a spacious living room, dining area, full kitchen, and a wood stove for warming up this winter. Just off the main living area is a bedroom with a comfy king sized bed and a full bathroom. A screened back porch offers extra space and stair-free access to the cabin. Head upstairs to a loft featuring a full sized bed and cozy chair for curling up in. Downstairs is a walkout basement and bonus den room. Head outside to enjoy the firepit area and lawn.
Spent three relaxing nights here for a little solo-vacation. The house is exactly as pictured, cozy, big porch, comfy couches, and there's a hiking trail that goes through the pine barrens/around the pond that you can walk to from the house (highly recommend!). Not much else around, but that's what makes it as calm and quiet as it is (at least in April). Visited some of the antique shops in Cornish, but otherwise just relaxed at the house and enjoyed nature. If you're visiting during a cold period you will need to tend the fire to keep the house warm but the host provides plenty of firewood and you get to enjoy a cracking fire for your efforts. Wifi was out when I visited but I had just enough cell service to do essential things on my phone so it wasn't too much of an issue.
We were right at home at Denise's! The wood stove is all you need in the winter to keep the house warm and toasty. Even though it rained five out of our six days, we loved every minute of our stay.
We had a wonderful stay at Denise's cabin. It was very charming and had a beautiful view of a lake and a cute wood-burning stove. The kitchen had everything we needed, and there were lots of games to play. Tons of beautiful scenery and an easy drive to Portland. Denise was very responsive and helpful. Would love to stay here again!
The cabin is located in a small, private neighborhood along the shores of a small pond in Shapleigh. The pond is serene and quiet -- watercraft are permitted to use only engines of under 7 horsepower. There is a beach area for resident use (not public) with a grassy area and picnic tables.
The neighborhood abuts Waterboro Barrens Preserve, nearly 2,500 acres of conserved land with miles of hiking, skiiing, and snowmobile trails to explore. The beautiful forests of this preserve are home to the state's best example of boreal pine barrens. As many as 11 species of rare butterflies and moths that feed on the barrens' vegetation have been documented on the preserve. Whip-poor-will and common nighthawk nest in open areas within the pine barrens.
Grocery shopping and other small town amenities are available in nearby Waterboro, a 20-minute drive.
There is ample parking in the driveway.
To access the trails, turn right at the bottom of the driveway (Shy Beaver Pond Road) and walk to the end of Pine Springs Road. The well-marked trailhead is on the left, just after Dragonfly Lane.
The water is just a a short walk away and you will not need a vehicle to get there. To access the water, walk down the driveway and cross Pine Springs Rd to a short trail leading to the pond. To get to the shared beach area, walk down the driveway, take a left onto Pine Springs Rd, and walk approximately 700 hundred feet until you reach the beach area on your right. It is marked with a sign and has small grassy area and picnic tables.
