Seven Springs Mountain Resort -

"You build your own independence with God's earth, rocks and trees," said Adolph Dupre. In 1932, he and his wife Helen spent $13 on 2 1/2 acres of forest and streams that reminded them of their homeland. Over the next 20 years, they built 28 cabins with native stone that Adolph quarried and timber that he felled. In the 1950s, Adolph rigged up a rope tow using an old Packard engine, and skiing took off.
Adolf’s son, Herman, took over management and development of the resort upon Adolf’s death in 1955. Today, the resort's thousands of acres offer recreational pursuits year-round in natural, still-unspoiled surroundings. For an upscale dining experience, make your reservations early at Helen’s Restaurant, the original home of Adolf and Helen Dupre on the resort.

Seven Springs Mountain Resort is located in the beautiful Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania and offers skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, golfing, restaurants, lounges, live entertainment, swimming pools (both indoor and outdoor), hot tubs, an Alpine Slide, Alpine Tower, summer tubing, sporting clays, zip lining, bowling, a spa, horseback riding, sleigh rides, roller skating, a game room, indoor miniature golf, disc golf, rock wall, trampolines, chairlift rides, biking, hiking, paddle boats, paddle boards, paintball, fly fishing, gem mining, etc. And, last but not least, Seven Springs now has Axe Throwing in the Foggy Goggle - the ski lodge bar with 50 beers on tap. Booze and flying axes. What could possibly go wrong?

Vail Resorts, Inc. purchased Seven Springs Mountain Resort on December 31, 2021. Seven Springs is now a part of Vail Resorts' network of 40+ resorts worldwide.

Since Vail Resorts’ purchase, Gregg Frantz of SnowBrains wrote a Trip report, dated January 25, 2024, entitled:
“Seven Springs: Vail Resorts’ Crown Jewel Ski Resort in the Mid-Atlantic Region”.
Following is an excerpt:

“Few ski resorts in the Mid-Atlantic offer almost everything a skier or rider could want in a mountain. The region is home to small-to-mid-size ski resorts that have been for most of history independently owned and operated. The region is not blessed with huge verticals, thousands of acres of skiable terrain, or a long ski season. However, sooner or later, every skier or rider accepts the reality that nature provided you with a ski resort and you should be grateful for that, regardless of how high or big the mountain is.

Seven Springs Mountain Resort is a mid-sized ski resort that is located about an hour east of Pittsburgh in the Laurel Highlands off of the PA Turnpike. It was purchased by Vail Resorts in 2022 from Bob Nutting who was the former president and CEO of Seven Spring Mountain Resort. Vail Resorts owns eight Mid-Atlantic ski resorts in Pennsylvania including Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, Laurel Mountain, Jack Frost, and Big Boulder, Liberty Mountain Resort, Roundtop Mountain Resort, and Whitetail Resort.

Quick Facts and History:
o Founded in 1937
o Elevation: 2,994 ft
o Base Elevation: 2,240 ft
o Vertical Drop: 750 ft
o Longest Run: 1.25 miles
o Average Snowfall Per Year: 135 inches
o Skiable Terrain: 285 acres
o Trails: 33
o Terrain Parks: 7
o Lifts: 10
o Beginner Terrain: 34%
o Intermediate Terrain: 44%
oAdvanced Terrain: 22%
o Hotel and Lodging Accommodations: 7

Seven Springs sits at the top of the list when it comes to the other eight ski resorts in the state of Pennsylvania with size, terrain, trails, lifts, amenities, and lodging. It is the crown jewel of all the Vail Resorts in the Mid-Atlantic region and for good reason. The resort has a dedicated group of locals and draws visitors from Pittsburgh, Washington D.C., Columbus, and Harrisburg, making it a regional destination spot. Seven Springs main hotel can accommodate 5,000 guests and has almost 1,200 condominiums and townhomes while also providing eight personal cottages and fifteen private chalets.

Besides having a wide variety of terrain for all skill levels of skiers to enjoy, Seven Springs also has plenty of indoor activities for friends or family who may not like being outside in the cold all day. The main lodge houses activities such as bowling, axe throwing, an indoor pool, an arcade center, mini golf, and the Trillium Spa. Whatever activity you are looking to find, Seven Springs is sure to have something that everyone will enjoy.

There are also a wide variety of dining options on the mountain with 14 different locations at the main lodge or hotel that is sure to satisfy anyone’s palette. For those staying in the Slopeside Hotel or for those looking for a great place to eat, the Slopeslide Restaurant is a great choice. The restaurant serves a very nice breakfast buffet with a lot of selections every morning and also has an omelet station as well. The Slopeside serves as a great place for dinner when you want a quiet place to relax after a day of skiing. They offer a lot of classic menu items as well as more contemporary items as well. There are several other places on the mountain to get grab-and-go food options such as pizza, burgers, tacos, and gourmet hotdogs.

Seven Springs does offer a lot of amenities and activities for everyone to enjoy, but most come to the mountain for the wide variety of terrain it offers. It is one of the biggest ski resorts in the Mid-Atlantic with 33 trails, 7 terrain parks, glade skiing, and a North Face complex. The mountain is spread out pretty evenly and skiers and riders can hit almost any part of the resort by accessing three lifts. The North Face complex is where you will find steep groomers accompanied by a series of headwalls that give you the opportunity to do some carving. That is where you will find intermediate slopes like Gunnar, Giant Steps, and Yodeler which all can be accessed from the Gunnar Lift. It is also where you will find my favorite beginner run at Seven Springs, Lost Girl. It is about 4,646 feet long and is a super fun run to go down if you just want to enjoy being on the mountain and relax.

If you are looking for the best Apres Skiing in North America then Seven Springs has you covered in that category as well. The Foggy Goggle is known throughout the East as being one of the best bars to hit after a long day of skiing. The Goggle has multiple bars throughout the facility and features a DJ on the weekends and it is the place to be after a long day of skiing. This past December it was voted the Best Aprés Ski Bar in North America according to the USA Today 10 Best. If you are staying in the Slopeslide Hotel, the Barvarian Lounge is located across from the Slopeside Restaurant and provides a great place to relax, enjoy great drinks, and meet new people. Seven Springs also offers the Matterhorn which is a classic late-night hot spot and features live entertainment on the weekends in the winter.

Seven Springs hosts several events throughout the year, but perhaps the most meaningful and fun-filled is the Pennsylvania Special Olympics. It will be held this February 13-15 (Tuesday through Thursday) and is a great time not only for the athletes but also the volunteers. Athletes compete in four events: Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Snowboarding, and Snowshoeing. There is an Opening Ceremony on Tuesday night that features a parade through the breezeway by the clocktower at the main lodge.

It is an inspiring and touching gathering of almost 250 athletes, volunteers, and fans from Maryland and Pennsylvania to this special event. The Special Olympics is an event you could tell that means a lot to Brett Cook, the General Manager of Seven Springs, Laurel Mountain, and Hidden Valley Ski Resort. “The athletes are so much fun to be around, and the level of excitement they have for the event is so exciting for me and everyone else as well,” said Cook.

Cook plans on sending a team from Seven Springs to participate in the Polar Plunge fundraising event that happens at the Point in Pittsburgh which supports the Pennsylvania Special Olympics as well. He also is planning on setting up Seven Springs’s own Polar Plunge at the end of the year at Seven Springs’ Annual Pond Skim Event to build a stronger partnership and to awareness for the Special Olympics.”

Area Attractions & Activities:

This is a partial listing of attractions & activities (some world class and world renowned) within a short drive of Seven Springs; including Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, the Flight 93 National Memorial, Ohioplye State Park, Idlewild Park, Historic Fort Ligonier, etc.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, 1491 Mill Run Road, Mill Run, PA 15464, 19 miles
Fallingwater, built between 1936 and 1939 by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is an architectural marvel. Voted the most important building of the 20th century in a poll conducted by the American Institute of Architects, this masterpiece was entrusted to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy by Edgar Kaufmann Jr. in October 1963. Fallingwater is the only remaining Frank Lloyd Wright house with its setting, original furnishings and artwork intact. Perfectly positioned over a beautiful 30-foot waterfall, this National Historic Landmark is a must-see for any visitor to the Laurel Highlands. Open to the public for house tours. Reservations are essential before visiting Fallingwater. Tickets may be purchased, or reservations may be made online or by phone.
Flight 93 National Memorial, 6424 Lincoln Hwy #30, Stoystown, PA 15563, 25 miles
“A common field one day.  A field of honor forever.”

Flight 93 National Memorial has a place on the nation’s honor roll of iconic places with Gettysburg and Pearl Harbor. Why is this ground so special? Why is this story so important? Flight 93 Memorial is the final resting place of the forty passengers and crew members of Flight 93.

On September 11, 2001, four commercial airliners were hijacked in a planned attack against the United States. Two airliners were flown into the World Trade Center Twin Towers and a third aircraft into the Pentagon. A fourth aircraft, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into an open field in the Laurel Highlands near the small town of Shanksville, after the passengers and crew stormed the cockpit to derail the plane from its intended target, Washington, D.C.
Ohiopyle State Park & Whitewater Rafting, 124 Main St, Ohiopyle, PA 15470, 20 miles
Located on the southern reaches of the Laurel Ridge, Ohiopyle State Park encompasses approximately 20,500 acres of rugged natural beauty and serves as the gateway to the Laurel Highlands.
Passing through the heart of the park, the rushing waters of the Youghiogheny [yawki-gay-nee] River Gorge are the centerpiece for Ohiopyle. The “Yough” [yawk] provides some of the best whitewater rafting in the eastern United States, as well as spectacular scenery.
Ohiopyle is the southern gateway into the Laurel Highlands and represents the beautiful natural resources and unique sense of community that visitors can find throughout the region. Surrounding Ohiopyle Falls is the Falls Day Use Area, the central point for the casual visitor.
Idlewild Park, Storybook Forest, & the Soak Zone, Rt. 30 East, Ligonier, PA 15658 , 25 miles
Idlewild Park & Soak Zone offer visitors to the Laurel Highlands some remarkable and unforgettable gifts to take home with them - smiles on their faces, laughter in their hearts, and memories that will last a lifetime.  It's no wonder that this family fun spot has been named "Best Kids' Park in the World" by Amusement Today, and "Best Park for Families" by the National Amusement Park Historical Association.
Historic Fort Ligonier, 200 S Market St, Ligonier, PA 15658, 23 miles
Journey back to the eighteenth century and discover Fort Ligonier, a reconstructed and restored French and Indian War fort nestled in the historic Laurel Highlands. The original fort, named "Post at Loyalhanna," was constructed in 1758. In 2017, Fort Ligonier extensively remodeled its museum to enhance visitors' overall experience. Its updates include five new paintings added to the art gallery collection, a new History Gallery, a reinterpretation of the St. Clair Parlor and a new George Washington Gallery. Fort Ligonier is home to a rare collection of George Washington artifacts, including hand-written memoirs and saddle pistols, which you can see up-close in the Fort’s museum. During the eight years of its existence as a garrison, Fort Ligonier was never taken by an enemy.
Quecreek Mine Rescue Site, 140 Haupt Road, Somerset, PA 15501, 19 miles
Nine for nine… In July 2002, nine miners were rescued from 240 feet beneath the earth in a never-before attempted effort. From their website: We invite you to come visit the rescue site where you can walk right up to the rescue shaft where the miners emerged from the dark, cold mine 240 feet below after 77 hours of frigid darkness. You will be greeted by the 7-foot-tall bronze statue of a coal miner at the top of the walkway into the rescue site. This statue, named “The Monument for Life”, was erected near the site to honor the dedicated team of rescue workers, the relentless determination of the nine miners and miners from all over the world. Hear the story of the miracle from people personally involved in the rescue. Touch the rescue capsule and try to imagine how it would feel to squeeze into it with your strength nearly gone. Visitors to the site will see the actual rescue capsule and broken drill bit and hear the story of the miraculous events that took place.

Five Covered Bridges of Southern Somerset County:
There are ten remaining covered bridges in Somerset County. Somerset County has some of the most beautiful landscapes to show off their beautiful bridges and also has some of the best maintained and landscaped properties around these structures.  There has been a lot of money and effort spent toward the reconstruction and upkeep of all these bridges. Information on 5 of the covered bridges located that are closest to Seven Springs is shown below:
o Barronvale Bridge, 7 miles, Rockwood, PA 15557
Barronvale Bridge is the furthest upstream of the three historic covered bridges that cross Laurel Hill Creek. At 162 feet in length, it is the longest of the 10 covered bridges in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.
o King’s Bridge, 8 miles, Rockwood, PA 15557
King’s Bridge is located just a few minutes' drive from the Barronvale Bridge. Like Barronvale, this bridge also crosses Laurel Hill Creek, and despite the road being rerouted to a modern bridge, it has been preserved for posterity.
o Lower Humbert Bridge, 18 miles, Confluence, PA 15424
Lower Humbert Bridge is the westernmost and southernmost historic covered bridge in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The closest community to the bridge is Confluence, PA, just about 3.5 miles away.
o Burkholder Bridge, 20 miles, Garrett, PA 15542
Burkholder Bridge (also known as Beechdale Bridge) is located just off Route 219 between Garrett and Berlin. Built in 1870, this bridge crosses Buffalo Creek and is 52 feet in length.
o Packsaddle Bridge, 35 miles, Fairhope, PA 15538
Of all the covered bridges in Pennsylvania, Packsaddle Bridge is easily one of the favorites. This is because it’s the only bridge in Pennsylvania with a waterfall directly underneath the bridge. This creates a most idyllic scene.
Note: The Laurel Highlands is the only place in the world where you can visit and tour Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece, "Fallingwater" and/ or the Flight 93 Memorial. Frank Lloyd's Wright's "Kentuck Knob" and Duncan House are also nearby.
