Just 400 yards to a dog friendly tearoom & bakery & footpaths in all directions from the door, its a perfect location for exploring or relaxing. Peace, Relaxation & Nature. The Duck's Nest at North View Cottages is a 2-bedroom cottage with it's own walled garden, within the grounds of our smallholding & landscaped wildlife gardens. Wander through the gardens from your private dining terrace, passing through the orchard & smallholding field to reach your own private meadow, with outstanding views of the hills & dales. Perfect for a picnic! On your way back, stop to feed the ducks on the pond or chat to the farm chickens & pick some apples or plums from the orchard for your tea. The cottage has a beautiful, cozy lounge with log-burner & dining area, a fully equipped kitchen and full bathroom. Free WiFi & internet enabled TV, piles of magazines & books, plus a stocked larder & fabulous gift basket full of local artisan products. Whilst the cottage is self catering, we know that sometimes you just want to stay in and not cook! So we also offer the option to order evening sharing platters, cooked or continental breakfasts & fresh farm produce from our smallholding: eggs, bacon, sausages, jams & chutneys. We are dog-friendly, and there are footpaths in all directions from the door, plus a dog-friendly pub, tearoom and shop all within a 2 minute stroll. Ideally positioned between Richmond & Barnard Castle, it's a perfect location for exploring all that the Yorkshire Dales and County Durham have to offer! Can be booked alongside Crofters' Cottage at North View, to sleep up to 7 people. PLEASE NOTE: The Milbank Arms, is temporarily closed until a new management team is installed. However, there are 3 other pubs within a 2 mile radius, all of which are dog-friendly and serve food. The tearoom is open Tuesday to Saturday.

This is a beautiful cottage which is set in a quaint and pretty village. Alison and Paul are great hosts and make you feel very welcome. The cottage has everything you could possibly want with some added extras such as the pantry and lovely welcome basket. It has a private garden which is great if you have a dog and there’s also a separate area where they keep their chickens and ducks. You are even given some food so you can feed them! Alison is a fantastic cook and you are able to order breakfast or dinner while staying there. We did this quite a few times and everything we had was amazing. We would highly recommend this cottage and look forward to returning again soon.
Amazing stay at the cottage. Cottage is cosy and immaculately clean. Great host providing lots of little extras and a welcome hamper. Lovely garden and outside area. Lots of wonderful walks in the area. Dogs made very welcome and big secure field for dogs to run around off the lead.
Alison is a wonderful host. She thinks of all the little personal touches that make a stay fabulous, and the addition of her freshly made meals really made our trip! Her cooking is fantastic and it really allowed my mum and I to truly relax. We had the curry platter, full breakfast and continental breakfast. Alison is extremely communicative, proactive and helpful. Check in was easy due to the clear instructions and the information in her welcome booklet is fantastic. I could have moved in! A beautiful, peaceful small holding with lovely animals and a fully enclosed meadow for the dogs to run around in. The cottage has everything you need, as well as beautiful extras such as a selection of teas, herbs and spices and homemade chutney. Such lovely touches and we really enjoyed your chutney! It was spotlessly clean with lovely fluffy towels! We will definitely stay again! Thank you for your hospitality Alison!
We had a wonderful week at Alison and Paul’s cottage. It was very child friendly with plenty to keep our 2 year old entertained- he loved feeding the chickens and turkeys every day. The cottage was very cosy and peaceful, with everything you could need. Alison and Paul were standout hosts, and there were lots of lovely touches that made our stay extra special. We enjoyed discovering the local area- highlights included the Helwith tea room, Hamsterley Forest, and the Beamish museum (a bit further afield but worth the trip). Highly recommended!
We had a lovely weekend at the ducks nest - we wish we could have stayed longer! We particularly enjoyed the log fire and food provided. We had the curry sharing platter, and tried both the cooked and continental breakfast - everything was delicious and it was all very generous portions and beautifully presented. There were thoughtful gifts in the welcome basket and even some corn to feed their chickens, which was really fun. Very peaceful surroundings and would thoroughly recommend

Barningham is a small, tranquil village based around a village green, with very easy access to the nearby towns of Barnard Castle and Richmond.
In the village we have a beautiful, dog-friendly, real-ale pub with log-fire & excellent menu. However, please note that the pub will be temporarily closing in January 2024 whilst they install a new management team.
The village also has an award-winning tearoom, bakery & deli, Coghlans, which does an outstanding afternoon tea, lunches, plus take-away or delivered 3 course fine dining meals, & all basic necessities (including pies & brownies!) in the shop.
Turn left out of your front door, and in just 320 yards you can walk straight onto Barningham Moor and follow footpaths all over the Yorkshire Dales. Alternatively, take the footpath straight opposite your door and you reach the River Greta: you can follow this footpath all the way to Barnard Castle, past the 'Meeting of The Waters' at the River Tees.
And, if your feet ache after all that walking, then just 2 miles outside the village there is a luxury spa, where you can relax & unwind after a full day of walking!
Ideally situated between the historic market towns of Barnard Castle and Richmond, you will be spoilt for choice of historic sites, museums, tea-rooms, galleries, parks and gardens to visit, and of course perfectly located for exploring all that the Yorkshire Dales National Park and County Durham have to offer.
County Durham is perfectly located between Yorkshire, The Lake District and Northumberland, so it is an ideal base for exploring a wide area. From the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the rivers Tees & Wear flow through the peaceful, rolling hills of the Durham Dales, forming the valleys of Teesdale and Weardale & tumbling down dramatic waterfalls. From there, they meander through the Vale of Durham passing through many picturesque villages & market towns. Eventually the rivers reach the sweeping beaches, sand dunes and cliffs of the Durham Coast, an area of Special Scientific Interest due to its flora & fauna. The City of Durham was listed as one of England's most beautiful cities by the National Geographic, and The Telegraph named it as one of the best UK City breaks for 2023.
Barningham village is just 15 minutes from Scotch Corner on the A1, so very easy access to any location.
The local bus, Hodgsons no.79, runs a service which passes through the village on route between Richmond and Barnard Castle.
The nearest train station is Darlington, just 20 minutes away, and we are able to offer a collection and drop off service, if needed.

We (Alison & Paul) absolutely love sharing our beautiful gardens & Smallholding with our guests. We are keen gardeners, with an interest in wildlife & foraging, growing our own fruit & vegetables, and keeping heritage, rare-breed pigs & turkeys, plus Indian Runner ducks, chickens & quail. We are keen walkers, so in our spare time we love heading out the door and away across the moors with the dogs (usually via a lovely, country pub!).
