We had a lovely stay - short walk to the beach and great beach bar. The kids loved being able to be on the beach so easily. Beautiful scenery and easily able to access other areas of Sligo!
LG
This is a lovely house in a beautiful part of Sligo. Very close to a spectacular beach, with a very welcoming local heritage pub.
If you're looking for a base to spend time near the sea and beaches then this house is perfect. A 5 minute walk from the pier, the beach and a beautiful cliff walk. We even saw dolphins on our last day. Des kept in touch before during and after our stay to ensure everything was good and he gave us information on things to do in the area. Will definitely be going back. Many thanks.
THINGS TO DO LOCALLY:
• Aughris Head Coastal Walk: take the nearby walk past the Famine Village and World War II look-out post. Walk along the cliff path for spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and native seabirds. See if you can catch a glimpse of the dolphins swimming past!
• Beach Bar: visit the nearby 17th century thatched pub for a pint and some local cuisine. Surfing lessons can also be booked at the adjoining campsite.
• Dunmoran Strand: have a day out at the beautiful local beach. Bring a picnic and blanket, enjoy the sun and let the kids build moats and sandcastles close by.
• Seaweed Baths: book a seaweed bath in the Victorian baths in Ennischrone. These traditional seaweed baths have their original steam pods, for a truly unique experience.
• Ennischrone Beach: visit this beautiful beach which is only 20mins away by car. 5 kilometres of golden sandy beach to walk along in the sunshine. Alternatively, if the weather is poor – have a day out with the kids at Ennischrone Waterpoint. This indoor facility has 2 pools and a waterslide.
• Eagles Flying: take a trip to Ballymote to visit this spectacular family attraction. Visitors can experience different types of raptors flying over their head or landing next to them. There is also a large Petting Zoo with guinea pigs, rabbits, donkeys, ferrets and many more animals for young children to pet.
• Strandhill: watch the surfers at Strandhill beach and have a relaxing latte in the café on the seafront.
• Knocknarae: climb this historic mountain where you can visit the grave of Queen Maeve. There are 2 alternative climbs, one is more strenuous and takes walkers up the northern slopes of Knocknarae, this walk includes over 500 wooden steps. The other route is past the ‘Glen’ to the carpark. From the car park follow the stone path up the hill. This walk is classified as easy-moderate. Each route takes 40-50 minutes to reach the summit where you can enjoy amazing views. On a clear day you can see as far as Nephin Mountain in County Mayo to the Slieve League sea cliffs in County Donegal.
• Coney Island: This is the original Coney Island which gave its name to the American Coney Island. Access to Coney Island via Cummeen Strand is only accessible when the tide is out and is marked by 14 stone pillars for a distance of 5kms to the island. The RNLI offer a handy service to advise you of the Coney Island tides. Text ‘Coney’ to 51155 (from the Republic of Ireland) and they reply very quickly with a message of local tide times.
Old stone walls and amazing empty beaches make the trip worthwhile. Laze on the beach, take a picnic or have a pint in the beer garden of the only pub on the island.
• Rosses Point: Visit the 3 beaches at Rosses Point and explore the local maritime history. Over 60 ships have been lost in Sligo Bay and the village was once home to pirates and smugglers. Visit some of the great pubs and restaurants along the seafront.
• Drumcliffe Graveyard: visit the final resting place of the famous poet W.B. Yeats. Enjoy tea and scones in the nearby Drumcliffe Teahouse.
Beaches and Bar/Restaurant are within walking distance but for groceries(4km) etc a car would be advisable.
This is authentic west of Ireland, a rural environment.
