As with other regions of Italy, Molise is punctuated with remote thousand-year old hamlets made of stone and typically located in scenic, if not spectacular settings perched on a ridge or tumbling down a vale on the side of a distant mountain. Many of these gems and their long-standing communities have been deteriorating as the older generations pass on while the young relocate in search of more modern life. One trend that is helping revitalize these dwindling communities and their inimitable stone hamlets is “albergo diffuso,” which as one article put it, “translates best as ‘scattered hotel’ and has really taken off this century. Rather than building a hotel to bring tourist euros into a picturesque village, or knocking buildings together, an albergo diffuso takes the more sustainable route of refurbishing empty or abandoned homes—generally within 150 metres of ‘reception’—as its guest rooms.” We stayed in two albergo diffuso properties on this trip—one of which is Christel’s fabulous place in Ripabottoni. She has done a beautiful job refurbishing several old stone buildings into modern, comfortable rooms and apartments and houses. In so doing she has brought life and commerce into this thousand year old hamlet, and is doing her part to help revitalize its community. If you choose to book with her not only will you be contributing to that motion but if yours is anything like our stay—and we were only there for one night—you may be in for a cultural experience, replete with local history, intimate insight into a hamlet gem like Ripabottoni, and an inside look at the hidden jewel of the authentic and under-visited region off Molise, not to mention a really good meal at a nearby trattoria and a great breakfast that she prepares for her guests. Needless to stay, I highly recommend Christel’s remarkable place and hospitality.

It was a beautiful and cozy spot in this spectacular Italian village. The host is very nice and accommodating, and speaks many languages. There is an amazing restaurant in town called “U Crischt” serving authentic food with local ingredients.
