Boasting ancient timbers thought to come from a ship that sailed the high seas during the Spanish Armada and laying firm claim to being one of the oldest buildings in Charlbury, there is so much more to Armada Cottage than first meets the eye. Behind the outwardly traditional stone faccade lies an utterly delightful retreat filled with earthy hues and natural tones. Elegant styling and sleek lines allow the original features and natural charm of the cottage to shine. Close to the heart of Charlbury, Armada Cottage is Grade II listed and, together with its neighbour, is one of the oldest buildings in town. Parts date from the 1400s, and when you step through the door, you'll find a host of original features and character by the bucket load. Exposed stone walls, ancient beams and floor timbers combine with thoughtful design, encompassing all the creature comforts needed for a memorable stay. It's the perfect countryside escape and families are welcome. The simple styling of the living room perfectly showcases the character of the cottage. Timber floors, beams and thick stone walls create a cosy and relaxing room. Tucked under the window is a dining table to seat four, whilst the autumn-hued-velvet sofa invites you to relax with a good book, or a film on the Smart TV, which is cunningly hidden in the corner cupboard by the fire. The beautiful kitchen combines polished styling with original features and has everything needed for a self-catering stay. Two delightful bedrooms, one king-size and one super-king (which can be a twin on request) occupy the first and second floors, along with two bathrooms. Outside space comes in the form of a Cotswold stone-walled courtyard. This sunny spot is perfect for lazy afternoons or alfresco dining. There is a wrought-iron table and chairs and a charcoal barbecue. Charlbury Railway station is a short walk away and if you're bringing a car, on-street parking is available. Ground Floor Kitchen: This beautifully finished room features terracotta and black quarry stone tiles, exposed stone walls and an original fireplace. There's a full oven, hob, dishwasher, and a fridge hidden behind sleek white cupboards, the window through to the living room shows the sturdy construction of the property parts of which date to 1489. From the kitchen, there is a door to the charming courtyard garden. Living Room: Ceiling timbers and rugged stone walls flank a restful room. Enjoy cosy meals at the dining table, which fits snugly under the window, and curl up on the sofa for a night with a film. The Smart TV is in the corner cupboard by the fireplace. You'll also find a selection of games in the cupboard under the window. First Floor Bathroom: The first bathroom is a spacious shower room with a step-in shower cubicle, hand basin and WC. There's plenty of natural light from the large window and you can expect the same high levels of attention to detail found throughout the rest of Armada Cottage. Behind the brace and latch door, you'll also find the washing machine. Bedroom Two: Boasting dark floor timbers, a king-size bed made up with crisp white linens, and the bright pops of colour coming from the cushions and throws, this lovely room offers space to relax and enjoy a restful night's sleep after a day of exploring. There's plenty of storage and a window seat where you can perch and watch the world go by. The high ceiling adds to the feeling of space. Second Floor Bedroom One: The top floor of Armada Cottage is home to the master suite. With its vaulted, beamed ceiling, super-king size bed, which can be arranged as twin beds on request, and in-bedroom claw foot bath, this is a space for the romantics amongst you. There is also a hand basin and WC on this floor. Outside Tucked away behind Armada Cottage is an enchanting walled courtyard. In the summer, fragrant climbing roses scramble over the weather-worn Cotswold stone walls, when the weather is kind this lovely space becomes a real suntrap. Take your time over leisurely meals cooked on the charcoal barbecue or just enjoy your morning coffee in the fresh air. There is no allocated parking space however on-street parking is freely available.
Armada Cottage was our home for three days and we loved it. The rooms are spacious, very well equipped and beautifully decorated. Located in a beautiful town, walking distance to all the amenities surrounded by the beautiful Cotswolds countryside. The view from the loft room was one of my favourite as you can see the rooftops and the church tower. Beautiful decor throughout the whole cottage, we couldn’t ask for more.
Charlbury is a wonderfully vibrant market town that has managed to retain a real sense of place and community spirit.
