The town of Berwick is steeped in history. Stroll to Berwick Village-along the Main Street of Berwick to take in the well kept gardens, old fashioned library and courthouse (which is now a cool bar and cocktail lounge). Wet your whistle at the Berwick Inn whilst getting a hearty pub feed. There are also an array of cafes, restaurants and boutiques.
Veer off the Main Street to find Pioneers Park, which is at the site of the old Berwick Primary School built in 1869. The old school buildings are now a cafe - a popular spot for brunch.
Continue onto Brisbane street, where you will find some heritage listed homes, circa mid 1800’s! Church street is absolutely gorgeous, with its old oak trees and quaint churches. Circle back to Main Street, to finish off with dinner at the locals favourite, Shanikas.
Make sure you take some time to visit Wilson Botanic Park on the highway into Berwick. Walking paths meander through the 36 hectares of exceptional terrain including cliffs, gorges, valleys, lakes and a North-American-style marsh. There is plenty of birdlife about and some endangered plant species. It was built on the site of a bluestone quarry. There is a pleasant, easy 3 km walk through the park - past the lakes, the flower beds and rose gardens, a bird hide and a stump sculpture. Keep an eye out for special events that also occur at the park, like open air cinemas, expos and other activities.
Also worth visiting is the Old Cheese Factory at Homestead Road. This two-storey structure was built of hand-made local bricks in the 1860s. The construction style is unique in the district. Built at the same time as the factory are the homestead and the kitchen/wash-house. The factory is now an art gallery and the kitchen is a craft shop. There is an English garden with lawns, a formal herb garden, shady trees, an ornamental pond and historic displays and there is the Homestead Cafe. The Berwick craft market occurs here once of month and showcases local produce and artisanal delicacies.
