Originally named Glacier City, Girdwood was founded as a gold mining town. As the number of miners increased, a supply camp arose that also supplied a trail stop on the route between Seward and Ship Creek - the latter of which is now known as Anchorage. Today, Girdwood is loved as a unique recreation destination, thanks to a picturesque setting, an extensive network of trails, and the award-winning Alyeska Resort.
Our home sits in the history rich "mining streets" area of Girdwood near the mouth of the Valley where the sun shines just a little brighter. We were attracted to this area for the beautiful views of Penguin Ridge, the close proximity to Anchorage, the wilderness, and to our playground...Alyeska Resort. Alyeska is one of the snowiest places on the planet with the longest ski season of any resort in the country.  Flashback to 1917, Girdwood had about 60 permanent residents. Even then the weekend population swelled to about 300 with visitors from Anchorage. Can you imagine what that journey was like then? Main Street in Girdwood had 16 buildings, 5 of which were saloons, the most popular being the Little Dipper Inn. Girdwood was built by hard working and fun loving men and women, a characteristic that persists to this day. The tradition continues as Girdwood still serves as a unique and tranquil place to escape. - The drive to Girdwood is one of the most beautiful in the State. However, road conditions can be variable. Please take your time and enjoy the beautiful scenery. We want you to arrive safe and sound. Some of the things you may see driving from Anchorage include Bald Eagles, Dall Sheep, Bears, Moose, Beluga Whales, the Bore Tide (with and without surfers), and Kite Boarders all along the picturesque Turnagain Arm. - Free Girdwood Shuttle Bus runs all over the Girdwood Valley. Closest bus stop is on the Alyeska Highway in front of the Glacier Forest Service Station only .3 miles from our home. Check the Girdwood Glacier Valley Transit website for more information.
- Paved bike/walking path just out the door will lead you to where you want to be. 14 miles to Indian along Turnagain Arm (one way). 1.9 miles to the Mercantile. 2.6 miles to Alyeska Day Lodge. 3.6 miles to Alyeska Hotel.
- The Alaska Railroad Girdwood Depot is only .5 miles from our home. You can book a sight-seeing train trip you'll never forget. This is an amazing way to see some of Alaska you would never get to see otherwise.
