The Neighbourhood
Many scenic drives, short-to-medium walks, activities and attractions await you. If you love mountains, forests, rivers or lakes, caves, wildlife, arts, crafts, antiques, history, local fresh food or wine tasting, you are in the right place.

A selection of brochures is provided for you to consider a variety of activities. Use the wifi internet to check out the information sites for updates on opening times, weather forecasts and suitability for you and members of your group.

The Landscape
Meander Valley Council describes Meander as 'a small rural settlement set amongst some of Tasmania's most beautiful scenery'. The traditional owners of the land are the Pallittorre, part of the Northern Tribe of Tasmania. As you enter Meander from Stocker's Plains, you are faced with the imposing rim of the Great Western Tiers (or kooperoona niara), which is spectacular especially in winter when the tops are covered in snow.
Two imposing peaks dominate the Meander township - Quamby Bluff to the east and Mother Cummings to the west. The Meander River flows through the middle of the town.

Getting around
In rural areas, car transport is the most convenient. However, for the more active traveller, mountain bikes and helmets are available to hire. Try Freedom Mountain Bike Hire or the Deloraine Visitor Centre.

Nearby places to visit
Perhaps explore the Meander Village. The local small store also offers a Post Office service, garage and cafe near the Meander River. There is the Meander Hall, recreation ground and a small children’s playground. The old Meander Primary School is part of the Deloraine and Meander House community centre, housing an op shop as well as a venue for other recreational activities.

River Activities
Meander is the home base for the Meander Wilderness Experience which offers an exciting river sledding experience in the Meander River. Details and bookings are on their website.
Fly Fishing is another sport that has seen international visitors fishing in the Meander River and on the Huntsman Lake. Try looking up Fly Fishing Meander River for fishing tour companies that come out this way. Also read the brochure on Anglers Access and Regulations.
Huntsman Lake
The lake can be accessed from the road directly opposite the cottage. The created lake, set in a valley surrounded by mountains, offers numerous spectacular photo opportunities. Follow the road to the east side and see the dam wall. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the park, picnic tables, barbecues and toilet facilities on the west side of the lake.

Meander Forest Reserve
Driving further along the Huntsman Road, turn west and drive through the Meander Forest Reserve to the start of various beautiful forest walks, including the Meander Falls, where there are more picnic and toilet facilities near the car park. Or drive up Scott’s Road for the starting point of the walk up Mother Cummings mountain. Please do your internet homework to find out about weather and track conditions and how you need to prepare yourself and other members of your group. Conditions can change throughout the day.

Deloraine
A 15-minute drive to the pretty town of Deloraine can be a quick trip for food or fuel supplies, or for a diverse experience try the great cafes and bakeries, restaurants, hotels, artisan shops, crafts, antiques, parks, playgrounds, golf course, swimming pool and much more. Medical, dental, physio, therapeutic massage services are also available.

The back roads and historic sights
Other routes, such as Sandy Lane or Cheshunt Road will lead you through some pretty farmlands with scenic views of the Western Tiers. Two kilometres along Sandy Lane from Meander is the stunning historic house 'Cheshunt', homestead of the original estate covering much of the district. Cheshunt is home to the Bowman family, whose ancestor William Bowman bought the estate in 1873. There is an extensive collection of workers' cottages and outbuildings around the homestead.

The fish farm
Take the Montana Road towards Deloraine or Mole Creek and along the way call in at 41* South Fish Farm, an environmentally responsible fish farm which raises salmon in freshwater ponds with a wetlands filter system. See their website for opening hours. Their cafe serves delicious light lunches and options include fish feeding, river walks or shop for a hot-smoked baby salmon, salmon fillets and a must-try smoked salmon rillettes which is used as a dip or spread.

Mole Creek
A leisurely 30-minute drive from your holiday home, is Mole Creek, another centre for beautiful short walks and the guided tours of the Mole Creek Caves with their amazing limestone formations beautifully displayed with thoughtful lighting. Check the internet for open hours and tour times.
Consider taking a few hours at least at the ever-fascinating Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary, at 1892 Mole Creek Road on the way to Mole Creek. Trowunna is a Tasmanian Tourism Award Finalist and is a conservation-based sanctuary for native wildlife
Trowunna accommodates for all types of fauna that occur naturally and pass through the region. The animals you see on display are there for one of several reasons: they are part of a breeding program; they are being rehabilitated for soft release; or they are unable to be released back into the wild and are given quality of life. It is home to a variety of native animals including some healthy Tasmanian Devils as well as wombats, wallabies, possums, birds of prey and many other birds.
Mole Creek Caves and Trowunna have entered into an exciting partnership. When visiting both sites, you can use your admission receipt from the first facility you visit for a 10% discount off the entry to the second venue.

The Honey Farm
On the way to Mole Creek, call in at The Honey Farm in the small village of Chudleigh, for tastings or try their delicious honey ice creams.

Liffey Falls
A great day trip can be made to the beautiful Liffey Falls with a lovely rainforest pathway and picnic area with barbeques, shelters and toilets.

Pine Lake
The picturesque Pine Lake on the Central Plateau is up the Highland Lakes Road on the way to the Great Lakes. It is a beautiful small natural lake with board walks and ancient Pencil Pines. Both Liffey Falls and the Great Lakes are accessed via Highland Lakes Rd/A5. From Meander, go 9km on the Main Rd towards Deloraine and take the right turn. Go another 27kms to Pine Lake. The Great Lakes can be seen 32 min (36.1 km) from Meander.
