The place was beautiful and scenic. The mountain’s view was highlight of our stay. Oaklan was very responsive and the tent was nice and clean. It got chilly in the evening, the diesel heater came really handy. Overall it was a nice experience.
Great stay - well kept offering and beautiful surroundings. No shower or bathroom (outhouse!) so keep that in mind! Would definitely recommend!
Oaklan is a great host, this place has an amazing surrounding with Mountains and Lake. Overall Good Experience 👍
Here are our recommendations for activities in the area
There is one small grocery store right here in Mountain view at the local garage station. There is also one in Waterton and it has most of what you would need. There is a larger grocery store in Cardston which is 15 minutes east on highway 5 from Payne Lake Lodge. Cardston also has some lovely places to visit - The Remington Carriage Museum, the historic Cobblestone Manor restaurant and the LDS Temple visiter centre.
Highly Recommended.
Things to do right here in Mountain View…. Our tent I located on a heritage farm called Fort Heritage & Frontier RV Park. It is a great place to give your group a farm experience, with wagon rides, petting zoo, Weaving & Spinning demonstrations. And they also offer an introduction to horses program where you can take your family to learn a few things about horse riding and then get rides around the barn yard arena with the horse being guided. So it is great for little kids or older folks too who would just like to have a nice horse experience. You can find their info @ "myrootsvacation" to book any activities your group would like.
Waterton of course is fantastic. All the restaurants are great in my opinion - but you must visit Weiners of Waterton - for their famous gourmet hot dogs.
Search "upliftadventures" for guided hiking in Waterton.
The hiking - The most famous hike in Waterton is Crypt Lake hike where you take a boat to get to the trail head but it is an all day hike.
Bertha Falls hike is really great if you don’t want too much up hill and not to far - maybe about an hour hike.
Bears Hump trail head is right in the town site and is a 30 minute hike up switch backs with a beautiful view at the top. It is strenuous but you can take all the time you want. The view is worth it.
Also the two have to see places are Red Rock Canyon and Cameron Lake. These are two different destinations within Waterton Park. Red Rock is about a 20 minute drive and once you get there you can hike a little up the canyon trail or you can hike south on Blakiston Falls trail which is short and flat and very beautiful.
Cameron Lake is about a 30 minute drive and very beautiful as well. There are trail heads for different hikes as you go up the road. And there is a nice hike once you get to Cameron Lake that takes you to Summit Lake and further if you are in for a really big hike up to the top of Carthew. Cameron Lake does boat rentals and is so lovely for that.
I believe you have to purchase a special license to fish in the park. You can also fish on Payne Lake which is just down the hill from the cabin. Fishing licences can be purchased at the local store in Mountain View - The Barn Store. The most flat and easy hike in Waterton is the trail that circles around Lake Linnet which is the very small lake on the left of the road as you first reach the Waterton townsite.
There are a lot of really nice little shops on main street and Big Scoop is the place to go for ice cream. Beaver Tails is another favourite place for eats.
One of my favourite things to do in Waterton is taking the Boat Cruise up to the head of Waterton Lakes. It is a bit pricey but it is nice to be out on the water and hear the commentary. There are also really really great Trail rides with Alpine Stables if you are at all interested in a horse back ride. There are e bike rentals, scooters and surreys you can rent at Pat’s garage station as well as paddle board rentals at Blakiston rentals. Paddle Boarding in Emerald Bay just underneath the Prince of Wales hotel hill is an exquisite experience…if the water is calm.
Cardston is just 20 minutes to the east on highway 5 and also has some really great things to check out. The historic Cobble Stone Manor Restaurant, the world famous Remington Carriage Center, the LDS Temple Visitors Center, Live theatre at The Carriage House Theatre and a really great Golf Course.
I hope this gives you a few ideas. It is a small park but very lovely.
