Since the Spanish conquest, Mérida has been the cultural capital of the entire peninsula.
How to "navigate" the Centro (Downtown)
Most streets in Mérida Centro are numbered, not named, and most run one-way. North–south streets have even numbers, which descend from west to east, east–west streets have odd numbers, which ascend from north to south. Street addresses are confusing because they don't progress in even increments by blocks, for example, the 600s may occupy two or more blocks. A particular location is therefore usually identified by indicating the street number and the nearest cross street, as in "Calle 64 and Calle 61," or "Calle 64 between Calles 61 and 63," which is written "Calle 64 x 61 y 63."
Getting food
The market
There is a traditional market eight blocks away. Visit it before noon.
In the "Mercado Lucas de Gálvez" you can find fresh fruits and vegetables, handcrafts, shoes, typical dresses. In the house we have some bags to do the shopping, feel free to use them.
The market is on Calle 65 and 69 between Calle 56 and 56A
Convenience store
Right across the house is a "Cervefrío" where you can buy the basics (water, milk, ice, some canned goods, snacks, beer).

Walmart
On Paseo Montejo, not very far from the house, you can walk (30 minutes approximately) but under the sun and with grocery bags this is quite a challenge, we recommend taking the car if possible.
Where to eat?
La Chaya Maya
Our favorite! Situated four blocks away from the house (across the Plaza de Santa Lucía) is located in an old renovated house. The perfect place to try some local food! Opens for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Los Almendros
Two blocks away on the Mejorada Park is one of the most traditional restaurants in Mérida. Cochinita is great and also if you feel adventurous order the dulce de papaya with cheese.

Ki'Xcocolatl
Also on the Santa Lucía Plaza is Ki'Xcocolatl a very special chocolate and coffee store, their approach marries premium quality chocolates in an attractive packaging and the legendary practices of the mayan culture.
If you go to the Ecomuseo del Cacao during your stay (close to Uxmal) you will see how this organic chocolate is made.

What to visit Downtown?
Walking from the house to the main plaza o Jardín Central is a pleasurable trip by itself. We recommend you take your time to enjoy the different plazas and shops. The Calle 59 is one of our favorites but we try to take different routes every time.

The Cathedral (La Catedral)
Renaissance-style architecture and towers exceeding 40 meters, is the oldest cathedral of Central America, has dome adorned with bows and still retains an old clock that served to give time to the meridians.
You can continue your visit on 60th Street where you will find restaurants, craft shops and traditional clothing, hotels and other buildings with great architectural value. On the 67 and 56th you will find the Popular Market, City Museum and other museums free to visit.
Want to have fun?
La Fundación Mezcalería
La Fundación is a kitch and cool "mezcalería" really close to the house.
Locals from all Merida and tourists enjoy drinking mezcal straight or in cocktails (made with tamarind, hibiscus, passion fruit, and other combinations). Don't forget to bring your ID no matter how mature you look.

How to get to your new house:
From the airport.
Take a cab. Merida taxis are simple but very safe. In the airport you will find an official Taxi stand. The fare to the Centro is around 200 pesos. It is customary to tip the driver if he helps you with the luggage.
If you are renting a car in the airport just put the address in your phone GPS. I recommend you rent the car beforehand, especially during high season. I have a very spacious garage in the house so don't worry, you will have plenty space to park two cars (no bigger than Siennas because they won’t fit through the door).
To visit all the great places around Merida (wonderful sinkholes AKA cenotes, archeological sites, beaches, colonial towns, haciendas and more) I strongly suggest you rent a car. There are also some tours and if you feel more adventurous you can take the local buses.
