Located in the historical market town of Kelso in the Scottish Borders, Cuddies Mercat is a light, spacious, self-contained first floor flat situated close to the main square. As a born-and-bred Borderer and history graduate, Lauren is passionate about the promotion and preservation of the area, and is always happy to offer any advice or suggestions to guests. *Discounts available for long-term stays, please feel free to message us to discuss.* The property boasts a rich history; from the cobbled streets it sits upon to the impressive architecture of the medieval street of Horsemarket. We have worked hard to ensure that the modern, stylish interior respectfully co-inhabits with the unique history of the region. There are two large bedrooms, an open and airy living room/dining room, bathroom and kitchen. Sash and case windows give the space a quaint, comfortable atmosphere while the interior provides all of modern life’s comforts including fibre Wi-Fi, a 48” smart flat screen TV with complementary guest Netflix as well as a host of other apps (please note, there is no live TV), comfortable beds, a strong shower and a well-stocked kitchen. The two single beds in bedroom #2 are zip lock beds and can connect together to form a king sized bed. Please request your preference when making your booking.
Lovely apartment right in the middle of Kelso. And thoughtful touches from the hosts. Thoroughly recommend!
Excellent accommodation which was as described and met expectations set by existing reviews. Hosts very quick to respond to queries. Excellent location in the town for food and drinks: Cobbles (food), Salt n Fire (food and cocktails), Rutherfords (drinks and friendly locals). Parking was no problem and safe; got parked directly outside of the accommodation for our Easter weekend stay. There was also enough to do within walking distance for a weekend so no need to drive anywhere. Would highly recommend Cuddies Mercat and Kelso.
Argued by some as the most architecturally attractive of the Border Towns, the history of Kelso goes as far back as the 12th century and boasts traditional cobbled streets set among boutique shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. There are two large supermarkets within easy walking distance of the Square, as well as pharmacies, a community hospital and two local Bank branches.
A source of great inspiration for the famous novelist Sir Walter Scott, Kelso is home to some of the most scenic views in Southern Scotland, with the mighty River Tweed meeting the River Teviot on the banks of the town. The area is renowned for world class outdoor pursuits, with exceptional facilities for fishing (the River Tweed providing some of the best salmon fishing in the world), shooting and cycling, as well as several beautiful hikes amongst the green hills and tranquil lochs.
History is tangible in Kelso; whether it’s wandering through the ancient ruins of the breath-taking Kelso Abbey - dating back to the 1100’s and once one of Scotland’s largest religious houses, visiting the embedded horseshoe in Roxburgh Street said to have been cast by Bonnie Prince Charlie’s horse in 1745, or wandering across architect John Rennie’s Kelso Bridge, the town marries ancient history with modern living seamlessly and is the perfect base for exploring all that the Scottish Borders has to offer.
Kelso also hosts a range of activities throughout the year, including farmers markets in the Square every month as well as high profile events at the Border Events Centre on the outskirts of town. We are always happy to help with planning and advice so please feel free to send a message with any queries.
There is free, on-street parking throughout the whole of Horsemarket.
Kelso is well connected by bus and the station is an approximate 2 minute walk to the property. All bus routes and timetables can be downloaded on the Border Buses app.
The Borders Railway Line provides regular trains from Tweedbank to Edinburgh Waverley - Tweedbank is the closest station to Cuddies Mercat (16.5 miles); the 67 Borders Bus route regularly runs between the Tweedbank terminus and Kelso.
There is a taxi rank within Kelso Square (taxi contact details provided in welcome book in property). We'd recommend travelling by taxi in the evening, as bus routes and times are sparse post 6pm.
