With stunning views across the valley, enjoy a unique stay in a historic railway carriage. This back-to-basics, off grid experience, enables you to really enjoy Central Otago of old. There are two railway carriages on this property, with the owner living in one and accommodation in the other. Both carriages are originally from the Otago Central Railway and now rest near the tiny settlement of Waipiata. Accommodation is made up of two rooms. 'The Guards Room', which is fitted with a long double bed and the 'Goods Room' which has a queen-sized bed (this is extra high but I can provide a step if you need help). There is an outside shower and toilet, so a head torch is recommended for any nighttime visits. REMEMBER this is an Off Grid experience so there is no power however you will be able to charge your phone or small devices. Electric Bikes can be charged at the local Waipiata Hotel when you dine in for your evening meal.
Mandy was an awesome host, extremely friendly and helpful. Thanks for the wonderful stay!
We enjoyed a wonderful family stay whilst riding the Rail Trail. Mandy was super friendly and spent time telling us a lot about the history of her original rail car accommodations. Mandy was sure we understood in advance the simple amenities of her lovely nature based/historical accommodation. Lovely open views of pastures and the mountains, friendly fun animals.
This place is exactly what Airbnb was created for - beautiful train carriages full of character in a stunning location with a fantastic host who goes above and beyond to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. We had an amazing weekend cycling the rail trail and great end to the day at the local pub only a short walk away from the accommodation. Can’t wait to be back next summer.
We had a great stay with Mandy and her beautiful pets. The carriage was clean, well laid out and contained everything that we needed. The idea of being off-grid is not for everyone, but we enjoyed it very much (and did not miss our phones and computers at all). Just before sunset, Mandy and James climbed the hill with a gorgeous little fur baby and watched the most incredible sunset that I have ever ever seen, better than anything seen in Australia. We then climbed back down the hill. The carriage allowed a good view of the starlit sky until the wee hours of the morning. I would recommend this stay to anyone, especially if you want to truly go off-grid for a few days. Well done to Mandy for creating such a great experience and making New Zealand the best place to be in the southern hemisphere :)
I feel privileged and very lucky to have stumbled across this gem of a place. Staying with Mandy in one of her train waggons has been the best travel experience I’ve ever had. The simplicity and tranquility of Mandy’s place is one of a kind. It didn’t matter one bit that there’s no electricity or running water. This makes her place even more special. I’m definitely coming back!
Central Otago is known for its big skies and wide-open spaces.
And if you enjoy good food then the Waipiata Hotel, especially famous for its pies is less than a five-minute walk away.
Naseby, is just a short 30minute drive away if you'd prefer to try your luck with curling and or mountain biking or simply soak up the atmosphere of this small historic town.
Your own transportation is required.
If you are cycling, 'The Trains' are located about 300m from the Rail trail.
IMPORTANT: Charging facilities for E-Bikes is provided at the local Waipiata Hotel for people dining in.
