Lovely stay in a quaint house with lots of character. Had we known the railway was so close - within 10 feet of the garden wall - we might have been hesitant to book, however we were amazed at how quiet it was still, with the railway sunk down at a lower level. It never disturbed us at all, and the steam train passing (once) on Saturday was magical. The views over the estuary are fabulous, as is the proximity to Shaldon with its lovely shops and water front pubs etc. and great walks with the dog who loved it too!
It was an absolute delight to stay in a building with such history and importance to the local area and to have been renovated to such a high standard. The views out across the estuary were absolutely stunning, either from sitting in bed with coffee looking out to sea or sitting in the garden looking back up the river with the occasional train rumbling past. The outside areas are secluded from any onlookers and sheltered from the coastal winds, meaning it feels very pleasant indeed, even through the unpredictable Spring weather we have had! The property itself is lovely and cozy to sit back and relax in after a long day coastal walking or after spending the afternoon creating your own gin at the fabulous Exeter gin company just 10 minutes walk from the property! Toby was quick to respond if I needed anything and always had a solution and suggestion to any of my questions about the local area. We will absolutely be back!!
Lovely place, local area lovely, garden & views great, Toby v helpful. (roads a little terrifying to cross at times ) but nothing to do with Toby, we all enjoyed the stay.
The Old Toll House was absolutely fantastic. It's such a unique place to stay, with loads of character and amazing views across the water. It's one of a kind and beautifully decorated. Parking was a doddle. We stopped in the space across the road, which made it nice and easy to unpack, and then moved the car just around the corner on Mill Lane (where it's free to park for as long as you like!). We loved the pubs and cafes over the bridge in Shaldon. Enjoyed a few pints at The Ferry Boat Inn in the sunshine (and a few more the day after..!) Teignmouth itself is a fairly short walk from the property and the route is straightforward. Once you're in town, there are plenty of pubs and restaurants. The Lobster Lounge was good fun for something a bit different. We'd recommend the train to Totnes for a day out too - it's a nice scenic route from Teignmouth station. Salcombe isn't far either and definitely worth seeing. Absolutely loved our stay. Thanks Tobias!
Teignmouth is a pleasant seaside town nestling below the Haldon Hills. It lies along a stretch of red sandstone coast on the attractive estuary of the River Teign, beneath the shadow of Dartmoor. There are panoramic views from the high ground around the town. Teignmouth claims record-breaking hours of sunshine and its geographical position ensures mild weather conditions for much of the time. The town is in a convenient position for Dartmoor National Park, and within easy reach of both Exeter and Plymouth.
On the opposite side of the bridge is Shaldon. This small town offers lovely views of the river and some impressive Regency buildings.
Featuring rows of fishermen’s cottages, thatched homes and period buildings descending in formation down greenery-clad hills and sitting shoulder-to-shoulder by the water, it is undoubtedly one of the most attractive villages in the county.
One of the most popular events in the year, Shaldon Regatta takes place every August and boasts over 120 events that all the family can enjoy. Over 200 years old, it is one of the oldest events of its kind in the country and continues to unite visitors and locals alike with all kinds of water-based fun, whether you’re a rower, sailor, swimmer or spectator. Also in August each year is the Shaldon Water Carnival. Described as something between a carnival and a regatta, the festival is all about colour, creativity, entertainment and, of course, water. Hard to condense into words, it’s best experienced first-hand!
Across the bridge is Shaldon. An idyllic little fishing village of quaint thatched cottages, period houses, contemporary homes and narrow winding streets situated at the mouth of the Teign estuary on the edge of the English Riviera and Torbay.
It lies adjacent to the older village of Ringmore and both enjoy a delightfully warm micro climate, sheltered from the sea by the Ness, the imposing red sandstone headland that has been a welcome landmark for centuries of sailors.
Shaldon enjoys a year round calendar of events including the famous Water Carnival and Regatta both in August, flower shows, fetes, art exhibitions,1785 craft fairs, an International Music festival in June, and a Fancy Dress 3 legged race on Boxing Day to name but a few! There are plenty of leisure activities to enjoy - sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, rowing, golf, fishing, bowls, walking the South West coast path or the tidal Templer Way towards Dartmoor and exploring the RSPB nature reserve at Labrador Bay by the Ness.
Enjoy all that the village and surrounding areas have to offer, from the many places to eat & drink to the beach both in Shaldon and across the the estuary in Teignmouth by taking England’s Oldest Passenger Ferry.
Teignmouth is a real gem on the South Devon coast served by mainline rail services to London Paddington. With records dating back to 1044 when the town was originally two separate villages, Teignmouth is an historic port on the mouth of the Teign Estuary. The town caters well for day-to-day needs with a comprehensive range of facilities, specialist local shops and its community hospital. There is an 18-hole golf course just 2.5 miles distant and the Dartmoor National Park lies approximately 12 miles away.
