Camarma de Esteruelas is a small town with a privileged location due to its proximity to the city of Alcalá de Henares, a world heritage city (5 min), Adolfo Suarez Airport (15 min) and the city of Madrid less than 25 min away. by car and just 11 minutes from the Oasiz shopping center.
Declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1998, just 30 kilometers from the capital, Cervantes' hometown is an ideal place to walk, explore its streets and squares, visit its museums and monuments, eat in one of its good restaurants, Have a coffee or a drink at sunset on one of its terraces and take home some typical sweets as a souvenir, among which are sugared almonds and crustada, which is a meringue, cream and puff pastry cake.
With more than 2000 years of history, Alcalá de Henares is a destination for lovers of history and culture. It houses treasures such as “Complutum”, one of the reference Roman enclaves in Spain.
Medieval Alcalá, with its Christian, Jewish and Muslim neighborhoods, keeps spaces with memories of mosques and synagogues, churches, offices and places that gave shape and character to a town full of contrasts and an example of coexistence. The walled enclosure, originally built in the 13th century, was later modified and expanded.
It was the first city designed and built especially as the headquarters of a university, founded in 1499, in the middle of the Renaissance, it served as a model for other educational centers in Europe and America. From its classrooms came various great works such as the Polyglot Bible.
Known as the “city of knowledge”, many great writers of the Spanish Golden Age such as Francisco de Quevedo, Lope de Vega, Calderón de la Barca, Tirso de Molina and San Juan de la Cruz were linked to it. But, without a doubt, among them all, Miguel de Cervantes stands out with his own light, who was born here in 1547 and whose memory is very present in every corner of this town bathed by the Henares.
If you want to know the origins of the city, you can start by visiting the Archaeological and Paleontological Museum of the Community of Madrid, which offers guided tours, or travel to Roman times, from which the Casa Hippolytus or the ruins of Complutum date back. From the medieval period, it should be noted that the Archbishop's Palace and the Renaissance highlight the University of Alcalá with its trilingual patio and the Corral de Comedias that offers guided tours in addition to a careful theatrical offering.
Throughout the year, Gastronomic Days are organized in Alcalá that will allow you to taste typical dishes of Castilian cuisine with culinary nods to the dishes mentioned in “Don Quixote”, such as Duelos and Quebrantos. The Gastronomic Week in February, the popular Tapas Route, or the Cervantes Gastronomic Days held around the festivities commemorating the birth of Miguel de Cervantes, turn Alcalá de Henares into the benchmark for the cuisine of the Golden Age.
Its Holy Week, which has been celebrated since the 16th century, has been declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest and one of the most important events of the year.
We recommend that you enjoy the city of Alcalá de Henares by walking through its most emblematic streets and that you use the public transport network to get from the apartment to the city center since right in front of the urbanization there is a bus stop that will take you to the center and has connection to the city's central bus and train station.
If you are going to travel a greater distance, we recommend that you use your private car.
