Eleanna Eco House is located in area of Agios Pavlos, a great spot for anyone who wants to experience true Crete and really get away from it all. South Crete is known for its unspoiled landscape and this is certainly what you will experience in the area surrounding Villa Hera.
The closest large beach is Agios Pavlos where you will also find a traditional taverna and small mini market. Beyond the main beach of Agios Pavlos lies the beautiful sand dune beach, its real calling card. Agia Galini is the closest established village (14kms) and has all the amenities you need during your stay, including supermarkets, bakery, pharmacy, cafes, tavernas and shops, all sprinkled within the charming narrow streets and harbour area.
The area around the house is totally natural and quiet. It is the perfect location if you wish to stay away from the tourist areas of Crete. If you like to explore, the villa is a great base from which to discover the unique natural environment of inland Crete. Explore villages, interact with the locals, find taverns with real Cretan cuisine and discover some totally isolated beaches!
Additionally, the well known village of Spili is around 30 minutes away. The picturesque mountain village has cafes, tavernas and a pretty square famous for its lion's head fountains. It is also well known for its handcrafted goods.
For those interested in archeology, the Minoan palace of Phaestos (32kms), famous for the Phaestos disc, and summer palace of Agia Triada (32kms) are interesting sites to explore and still maintain their original integrity. A little further afield lies the archeological site of Gortyna, once an important city in Crete, especially during the Roman era. There is so much to enjoy around the area if you can tear yourself away from this amazing villa.
The south coast is famous for its array of wonderful beaches, all offering crystal clear waters and some great snorkelling opportunities.
Triopetra beach is only a stone’s throw away and definitely worth a visit. Two wide sandy beaches, they are separated by a small peninsula. At the edge of the peninsula, in the sea, three majestic rocks rise. Triopetra is named after these rocks, since it means “Three Rocks”. On the beach there are a few rooms and taverns, and umbrellas are offered.A sweeping stretch of sand, it is named after the 3 rocks which rise proudly from the sea and has a few tavernas.
Ligres is a secluded, beautiful, sandy beach with a nudist area right at its end. Very nearby there are taverns where you can taste fresh fish of the area and local meals. Do not forget to visit the neighbouring Agia Fotia beach with its small tavern on the water.
Agia Galini has 2 stretches of sand and pebble beach and offers a good swimming opportunity if you are visiting.
Preveli beach is a beautiful sandy beach famous for its palm trees. Here, the mouth of the river Kourtaliotis empties into the sea. Stroll up the side of the river to discover the true beauty of Preveli - amazing rock pools in which to take a refreshing dip! Park just before Preveli Monastery (also worth a visit) and follow the track down to the beach. It is a 15 minute walk downhill - don’t forget you also need to walk back up!
A little further afield but well worth the journey, the beaches of “Schinaria”, “Damnoni”, “Souda” and “Plakias" are simply beautiful. All are organized and have tavernas or a cafe. Crete is a magical island , just waiting to be discovered.
