Ferragudo is a beautiful and traditional Portuguese village situated at the mouth of the Rio Arade just across from Portimão (which is very accessible for more restaurants and nightlife). Many of the houses in Ferragudo are traditional fisherman's homes so the village is very picturesque with whitewashed houses 'tumbling' down the hillside towards the river front and people sitting outside the cafes around the village square, passing the time of day. We first came here eight years ago and it has barely changed – we kept coming back!
Ferragudo Village is surrounded by palm-fringed gardens, which run alongside a narrow river up to the main cobbled square, Praça Rainha Dona Leonor. This is a lovely area with lots of cafés, fabulous restaurants serving a range of food (mainly traditional Portuguese) and a few bars facing the square where they have traditional Portuguese folk bands playing in the summer months. There are also other restaurants dotted around the village that offer lovely food and great value.
The beaches are stunning. Our apartment is a short ten minute walk to four of the best – Praia dos Caneiros (beach bar and fantastic restaurant on the sand) & Praia do Torado (accessed via Caneiros at low tide) Praia do Pintadinho (beach and snack bar on the sand) and Praia do Molhe. Praia Grande is also not far away, about 15 minutes walking along the cliffs.
If you wander down to the beach nearest to the village (Praia da Angrinha) you will see the amazing Fort of São João de Arade. It began life in the 15th century as a lookout tower (to give warning of attacks by pirates) and then was extended in 17th/18th century as part of the fortifications protecting the mouth of the river. (On the opposite bank above Portimão marina is the fort of Santa Catarina.)
There are also lots of fun activities that will keep families of all ages entertained close to hand. The calm waters of the river are particularly good for windsurfing and other water sports and Slide and Splash water-park is just a short distance away at Lagoa - ideal for cooling off on a hot summer's day! There are all sorts of boat trips from the river front in Portimão - fishing, trips around the coastline and caves, dolphin watching or even a trip up the river to Silves.

The apartment is a 45 minute drive from Faro airport by car or up to 1.5 hours via transfers (due to the stops on the way).

If you don't want to hire a car there's a regular bus service that we often use to get to the village for dinner/drinks (five mins), Lidl for supermarket shopping (ten mins) and Portimão (15-20 mins). You'll find the timetable in the guestbook.
There's also a boat that leaves from the village to Portimão in the summer months. Again, you'll find the timetable in the guestbook.
We'll also leave taxi numbers for you should you need them while you're our guest (taxis back from the village in the evening are around 5-10 Euros).
