Bessingham is a traditional North Norfolk village, and its church, which is dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin, is one of the oldest round tower churches in England.
Only six miles by car is the family orientated, traditional seaside town of Cromer with its award-winning pier, beautiful beaches with rock pools, cliffs and great sandy expanses, and great independent places to eat out in town. It is also fast becoming Norfolk's surfing hot spot - lessons and equipment hire can be booked at Glide Surf School. There is an excellent museum telling of the maritime history of the town. A visit to the impressive medieval church can include a climb up the tower for great views. Or for a lively family day out Amazona Zoo is a must. The Pier has a Pavillion Theatre, the only one of its kind in the country, which stages traditional variety shows and live music events. With plenty of carnivals, markets and festivals, there's always something going on in and around Cromer. For fresh, local seafood, pop along the coast road towards Sheringham to Rocky Bottoms where they deliver local shellfish from pot to plate in an lovely setting.
Sheringham, another Blue Flag beach resort a few miles away, was originally a small fishing village but the arrival of the railway in 1887 turned it into a popular destination for visitors far and wide. The Poppy Line still operates both diesel and steam engines which run from the pretty station in Sheringham centre along the coast through Weybourne and Kelling and on to Holt. There is plenty of family entertainment in Sheringham whatever the weather, including Splash tropical indoor pool, with huge water slides and a wave machine. Sheringham has carnivals and festivals all year round including the famous Crab & Lobster Festival and Sheringham Carnival. Sheringham also still has a large traditional market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Holt is a popular North Norfolk town, bursting with Georgian charm. It's a shopper's paradise, with art and antique galleries, independent fashion boutiques and gift shops, grocery stores offering the best of local produce and a good selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants to tempt your taste buds. One place not to miss is The Folly Tea Room. And The Kings Head at nearby Letheringsett has recently achieved The National Pub & Bar Awards 2021, Norfolk County Winner.
The National Trust properties at Felbrigg Hall, Blicking Estate and Sheringham Park are also only a short drive away.
