Santa Domenica Talao · 整套联排别墅 · 2室3床0.5卫 · 可住4人 · The REAL Italy in a friendly hilltop village
If you want a luxurious, bland 5-star hotel to be found in any city, then stop reading now! But if you'd like to stay in a small friendly village in an old house; whitewashed walls, forest-green shutters, a few less-than-perfect features, a crack or two, a bit of a dip in a floor...! but views of sea and mountains, wine on the private terrace....then read on! We are at the foot of the Pollino National Park, .... This is Calabria, overflowing with a wealth of natural beauty. We are in the country! There are no wild parties, no traffic noises, no hordes of noisy tourists, lots of peace and quiet and fresh air. The loudest noises are from the occasional Fish and Potato sellers, and the goat bells, sometimes a bit of horn blowing if their footy team wins! There IS wi-fi, perfectly adequate for emails, news, Googling. Movie streaming a bit more difficult, but I'm sure you are not on holiday to do that! This is a rural area.... think of SDT as a delightful detox from technology! So get out and explore! Santa Domenica Talao is ideal for both visiting the beaches along the coast, and to reach the ancient villages dotting the road into the mountains. Wonderful for hiking and communing with nature. Lamezia airport is easily accessible, with many flights. Two hours north to wonderfully gritty Naples. The house has a roomy sunny balcony, for alfresco lunches and a glass of wine in the evenings.
The house is lovely with an amazing terrace it had everything that you would need ,felt like a much loved home . Maria was very understanding when our train was delayed and answered all of our questions easily. The house is spotless.
We were looking for the small hill town experience, and that's exactly what we got! The owners have someone local that manages their place and we never wanted for anything! The house is located at the top and in the back of the village and quiet. Their terrace was perfect for relaxing although we usually found ourselves down in the piazza sharing conversation and coffee/aperitivos with the locals. The kitchen was simple and adequate for us to cook several meals And we so enjoyed wandering up and down the streets admiring all there was to see and meeting people! It was a perfect time for us!
Rosemary’s and Paul’s Airbnb rental is a great place to stay in Santa Domenica Talao. We’ve stayed multiple times. The location is great. Everything is within an easy walking distance, but the area where the bnb is located is peaceful and quiet. We love to sit on the terrace in the evenings and sip a glass of wine. We feel very much at home there and we believe that others will experience the same.
This is not in a wild tourist area, so please don't expect nightclubs! The little village is home to about 1300 people, small enough to be unique, but large enough to have bars, cafe, baker, butcher, doctor, pharmacy, several small general stores, florist, appliance shop, gift shop, and hairdresser. There is a Bancamat, and a self-serve petrol station 2 minutes away. There is also a museum displaying the town's history.
The bar Chiazza, a very short walk away, and Bellavista Restaurant have free wifi.
The Bellavista serves freshly made Italian food and a great antipasto using their own produce. If you hanker for more excitement, Scalea in August is just 15 minutes away, though Santa Domenica and surrounding villages have their share of gatherings, musical events etc in the year as well.
There is ample parking close by in the street, under the trees. A CAR IS DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED, though you can catch a bus which goes twice a day to the coast at Scalea, and west to Mormanno. Catch it from the Piazza. The railway station at Scalea links the north with the south and fares are cheap and the trains comfortable and clean. Taxis are available at the station. You could fly into Lamezia Terme airport and hire a car there.
自我介绍
We are 76 and 78, and Paul and I were forever intending (or threatening!!) to retire, and finally did it in December, 2022. So now we volunteer at a bookshop and Op shop and do the odd bout of catering. Travelling has become a way of life and we take off overseas whenever we can, though sadly not for nearly three years due to Covid! With a son and 2 daughters and now 6 grandchildren life is busy and fun. We live in an exquisite rainforest area of Queensland in the mountains, but Santa Domenica Talao (SDT), with its majestic mountains, winding paved streets, old men setting the world to rights in the best piazza in Calabria, is our cherished second home. We are incredibly lucky to have Maria, a wonderful local, to meet and greet guests. She has become our dear friend.
