Bulawayo is the second largest city in Zimbabwe. The name Bulawayo comes from the Ndebele word bulala and it translates to "the one to be killed".
Bulawayo is nicknamed the "City of Kings" or "kontuthu ziyathunqa"—a Ndebele phrase for "smoke arising". This name arose from the city's historically large industrial base. The large cooling towers of the coal-powered electricity generating plant situated in the city centre once used to exhaust steam and smoke over the city.
Mafiris Studio is in Khumalo suburb, which is approximately 3km from CBD. Khumalo suburb was named after the Royal Clan of the Matabele. There is a nearby shopping center where you can buy your groceries from a local supermarket chain. The shopping cent is 500m away from the house (within walking distance).
The hottest month in Bulawayo is October, which is usually the height of the dry season. The average maximum temperature ranges from 21 °C (70 °F) in July to 30 °C (86 °F) in October. Nights are always cool, ranging from 8 °C (46 °F) in July to 16 °C (61 °F) in January.
Most rain falls in the December to February period, while June to August is usually rainless. Being close to the Kalahari Desert, Bulawayo is vulnerable to droughts and rainfall tends to vary sharply from one year to another.

Mafiris Studio is located approximately 2km from United Bulwayo Hospitals and 8km from Mpilo Hopital (both givernment hospitals), and 4km from Mater Dei Hospital (a private run hospital)
Tourist attractions
Bulawayo has museums of national importance, including the Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe, National Gallery, Bulawayo and the Bulawayo Railway Museum. Mafiri's Loft Apartment which is located in Khumalo is very close to the museums and national gallery (approximately 3km from Khumalo).
One of Zimbabawe's major tourist attractions is the oNational Park, less than an hour's drive from the Bulawayo. As one leaves the city travelling south, many granite outcrops are seen. They increase in number and size as the distance from the city grows. By the time the Park is entered one is surrounded by a dramatic and enveloping scenery that is unique and extraordinary.
Just twenty-two kilometers to the west of the Bulawayo is Khami Ruins, one of southern Africa's magnificent Late Iron Age ruins (now an Unesco World heritage Site.) The land adjoining the ruins has been made into a Nature Reserve by the City Council, called Mazwi Nature Reserve, where the visitor may walk, drive and picnic.
Also worth a visit and situated on the main Gwanda Road, 23km from Bulawayo is the Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage and Research Centre, a home for orphaned, sick or abandoned wild animals. There are lion, leopard, cheetah, black rhino; many species of antelope and a large collection of birds.

Retail Shops & Transport
Mafiris Loft Apartment in Kumalo is within walking distance (500m) from a retail shopping centre which has a supermarket for supplies that the guests might need. Its also 1km away from Ascot Shopping centre which has a larger supermarket as well as a garage for fuel. Transport is predominantly via self drive or use of public transport (known as kombis) which are relatively affordable. Private taxis are available although they tend to be more expensive than kombis.
