We had a lovely 5 week stay. Starting with a simple and easy check in. Paula, always available to our inquiries, welcomed us with a bottle of wine and granola bars. The neighborhood was quaint and quiet. No issues with the neighbors as we were aware they were there but never saw them. On weekends it was more evident but contained and respectful of our privacy. A clean home located close to many restaurants, adorable little shops and commodities within walking distance. The home looked just like the photos. We spent most of our time on the huge porch overlooking the Atlantic and extended dock. Overall we had a wonderful stay, loved the location, the home and accessibility to shops for all our needs. Well worth the money we paid!
We LOVED our month in Tavernier! Easily one of the best houses we've ever rented. The open living area, expansive deck, and sunrise views each morning were our favorite aspects. Honestly, some of those sunrises were like nothing I've ever seen. The house had a great Keys feel to it. Our son also loved the swing in the living room :) The neighborhood is great and everyone we met was so friendly. We felt like part of the community while we were there! Paula was an excellent host. She was friendly, responsive, and went above and beyond. She left us generous welcome gifts and even had a missing item shipped to the house for us while we were there. We'd love to come back next year!
You can not beat the location if you are looking for easy boat access to all the upper keys has to offer. The home is charming and beautiful decorated. Paul was an exceptional host. The home was perfectly stocked, and has a cool collection of books about the local area and Florida from over the years. The dock and the back porch embody the Keys!! We loved walking up and down the dock looking for wildlife, right off the dock we saw dolphins, manatee, stingray, tons of fish, and a nurse shark. Paul has kayaks for us to use, and bay this home is on is so calm its perfect for kayaking. The back porch and outdoor furniture and hammock was perfect for enjoying looking out at the water. Sail boats like to moor out in this bay, so it was neat to see the sailboats in the bay. We could not have asked for more!!! Paul was super responsive, kind, and offered great local tips. We were even welcomed with a craft kit for our children and a bottle of wine for us. Just wonderful!!!!!
Excellent waterfront home. Immaculate and well kept. Lovely lofty ceilings. Great snorkeling/fishing off the dock. Close to lots of great eats and other activities. Spent hours on the porch watching the ocean, weather, etc. Great kitchen and living area. Note that the master and main guest room face east with no window coverings so be prepared to rise early - or just bring a sleeping mask if you want to sleep in.
My girlfriend, my Scottish terrier, and I stayed at this property for a month. We enjoyed ourselves, but there were a few issues. Pros: - Location is beautiful: you can see the sunrise over the water from either of the two main bedrooms. - The house is directly on the water. - The house is full of tasteful antique furniture. - The neighborhood is quiet and feels safe. - The sea is usually calm and suitable for paddling. - There is a nearby park suitable for walking dogs. - The large provided rope hammock is comfortable and well-positioned. - There is a large and sturdy dock that lets you walk out over the water. - The master bathroom has a large shower, a large bathtub, and plenty of storage. - The home's library contains a good selection of books. - The home's overall layout is well-thought-out, makes good use of space, and maximizes access to the home's view of the water. - Roosters wake you up in the morning. (The Keys have a large feral chicken population.) Cons: - The air conditioning was not working when we arrived. The host scheduled a repair as soon as we mentioned the problem, but it took three days for the new parts to arrive and for the old air conditioner to be replaced. Without air conditioning, the place heats up very quickly in the afternoon even with all the doors and windows open. My girlfriend and I were in the unit when the air conditioning tech arrived to diagnose the problem. We chatted with him while he examined the equipment. When the tech opened up the air conditioner access panel in the laundry room, a cloud of dust billowed out. The tech asked my girlfriend, "Wow. When was the last time someone changed the filter?" My girlfriend replied, "I don't know." The tech explained, "This thing hasn't been changed in a while. In Florida, you really should be changing the filter every three months." - The hot water was not very hot. There is a large bathtub in the master bathroom, but baths with lukewarm water aren't very fun. - The host communicated promptly, but we don't feel that everything was clearly explained up front. We were a bit surprised by some of the host's expectations. - The interior doors are not solid, but instead have center panels made of non-adjustable angled wooden slats with open spaces between them. Sound is transmitted easily through this kind of door, which we found to be a problem when one of us wanted quiet time to work on a project or to read a book. - The doors easily slam shut on their own when a slight breeze blows through the house. My girlfriend and I were regularly startled throughout our stay by a door somewhere in the house loudly slamming shut on its own after we'd opened a window elsewhere in the house. - The televisions are small. The one in the central room is mounted awkwardly --- low, so as you're sitting on the couch, you have to look down at an angle of about 15 degrees below horizontal to see the television. My girlfriend is not a native English speaker and relies on closed captioning to help her understand English dialogue. She could not read closed captioning from the couch. We did not use the televisions in the bedrooms, but they were also small. - The home has three bathrooms. The main bathroom was fine, as I mention above. The secondary bathroom (next to the two non-master bedrooms) is fine, but has limited storage. The third bathroom is very narrow; it contains what appears to be an antique commode, which is nice, but the toilet in that bathroom makes a loud whistling sound when used. We sometimes heard the toilet in this third bathroom make that loud whistling sound when nobody was using it. - We were not able to fully close the window above the tub in the main bathroom. - The house is directly on the water, but a concrete barrier separates the yard (which is sandy, but not a beach) from the sea. It was challenging for my girlfriend and I to get our paddleboard and kayak over this barrier. Boarding from the dock wasn't an option because the dock was high off the water. I suggest mounting a ladder to the dock. - On the other side of the concrete barrier is a rocky area. The rocks are exposed at low tide and covered with water at high tide. These rocks are pretty rough: my girlfriend cut her foot on one of these rocks, so be careful! - The main living area in the house is separated from the deck outside by a series of large double doors. When we arrived, we wanted to open all the doors (because the air conditioning was not working --- see above), but found that only some of the doors opened. Other doors did not open because the levers that unlocked them had rusted shut. - The large double doors to the deck have hooks that are supposed to hold the doors open. At some point in the house's history, something changed, and now most of the door hooks don't connect to anything. That means that there's nothing to hold the doors open in the wind. When my girlfriend and I wanted to keep the doors open for fresh air, we had to place random objects outside to hold the doors open or the doors would slam shut at random times. - Some of the deck boards are loose. - The mattress in the master bedroom is somewhat smaller than the bed, so there's a gap between the mattress and the headboard that produces discomfort when trying to sleep. Pillows help fill that gap. - The bed in the master bedroom is on a raised platform about a foot above the level of the floor in the rest of the house. It's easy
