Quiet residential area in south McAllen. Large mature oak tree lined driveway will lead you right to our gate. It is in the center of all the action in the Rio Grande Valley, yet feel like worlds away.
McAllen, Texas is a bustling border town where the Mexican nationals come to "McAllear" which means to to shop and eat out in American style in McAllen. In Winter time, many people come from the north to escape the snow. These folks are "Winter Texans" and they comprise a significant portion of our community. The locals are predominantly hispanic and Spanish speaking. I was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, but spent part of my youth in northern California. From my own personal frame of reference and perspective, I find McAllen a fantastic place to raise a family. It is so safe here, people are friendly and kind. Food is not your typical TexMex, but more close to Mexican. However, there is an endless choices for American restaurant chains here. The retail scene, especially at La Plaza Mall is quite impressive. Where large Malls are shutting down in other metropolitan centers, there is no fear of that here. La Plaza Mall boasts being the number one grossing (per square feet) mall in the USA!
One thing you might find surprising here in McAllen is the night life. The night scene is not only for the bar hopping young crowd. Restaurants are full with families with even very young children, dining and celebrating late into the night. When I drive around at night, I am surprised to see the restaurant parking lots filled with so many cars.
It is not only the Winter Texans and the Mexican Nationals who frequent McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley. We are famous for our world class birding. Two of the main migratory paths meet in the area, allowing for double the number of species, and many tropical birds come all the way up to McAllen but no further. We have several nature preserve areas designated as "World Birding Centers". Our lodge is centrally located so you can make day trips to all the famous parks. The best part is coming back at the end of the day to relax and continue to enjoy the birds in the lake, as well as all the other critters who might pay you a visit as you sit outside your rooms.
We are in south McAllen, just to the south of the 83 Freeway. Close to everything, easy access to the freeway, but feels very secluded. You have got to come and see for yourself!
