HISTORY April 15, 1912 is a synonymous date in any historian's mind. Everyone knows the story, right? However did you know, having conducted some research on this property, it was once owned/ occupied by Henry Moneypenny, a Boilermaker who worked at The Shipyard in 1911 during the construction of the Titanic. He lived here with his wife Annie and two sons who also worked at the shipyard. According to the 1911 census it was deemed 1st class housing due to the number of rooms and windows in the property. There is also a memorial plaque at the top of the street junction with Templemore Avenue, commemorating Ennis H Watson who worked in the shipyard and died on the Titanic's maiden voyage.
房子很好,生活用品也很全面。但是我有点不理解的是,我走的时候,房东给我打个电话,说了很快很多,而且有一点口音,我并不是很听得懂。后来发短信问他,是不是有什么问题,又不理我。真让人有点莫名其妙。。
Everything was great. Julie-Ann has been a very good host. Thanks again for everything!
As this is the third, and hopefully not the last time, I stay at 164 Madrid. I could not feel any more at home, being in the gorgeous home, knowing the walking distances and times to all the main attractions and places of necessity. I enjoy the great neighborhood, and the people who live there, could not be friendlier. Julie-Ann is an absolute pleasure to deal with and I not recommend to others to stay here but I would encourage them book now to avoid disappointment. A piece of paradise in a very historical place. Thank you Julie-Ann, I look forward to my next stay.
Madrid Street has a very interesting history. Many of the houses were occupied by men working in the shipyard most notably The Titanic.
There is a brass plaque at the end of Madrid Street/Templemore Avenue in commemoration of 'Ennis H Watson' apprentice Electrician at Harland and Wolff.
He lived in the street. He was a member of the Company's Guarantee Group for RMS Titanic and lost his life in the voyage.
Back to the present day. ...
Belfast probably safest city in Europe at this time. The house is central to commuter routes, train station, local airports. free on street parking, no restrictions. You are close to a small peace wall and some of Northern Ireland's famous murals.
Check out the Titanic Visitors centre, Ulster Folk & Transport Museum, Open top bus tour, Game of Thrones tour, Grand Opera House, Lyric Theatre, Crumlin Road Gaol and lots more...
You should also visit 'VISIT BELFAST' website for current events, where to eat, drink, shop & explore.
Less than 2 mins walk from the house is a swimming pool, sauna and gym (Templemore Avenue baths-Only surviving Victorian Baths in Ireland).
I have a friend who takes walking tours around the East side of Belfast, this is based on George Best, Van Morrison, Yardmen and CS Lewis trails and more.
Should you wish to avail of a tour please ask in advance to book, with a specific date and time, and I will pass on Morris' number to you to arrange direct.
Taxi tours can also be arranged with John.
Location directions are very important... Please do take note of directions and come into Madrid Street from the Templemore Avenue side.
There is a peace wall which is not marked on Sat nav GPS maps therefore if you rely on Sat nav GPS you may find yourself on the other side of the wall.
Tried and tested using Strava and Fitbit....
