NOKOMIS HISTORIC DISTRICT
• Nokomis is one of a handful of towns in southwest Florida that still have that unspoiled ‘Old Florida’ feel. Our district is an enclave of homes, shops and restaurants, some of which were built in the FL land boom of the 1920s.
RESTAURANTS
• Walk to Cafe Evergreen, Captain Eddie's Seafood, Thai restaurant, Nokomos Sunset Hut, and Bayside Grille
• A very short drive to many other restaurants of all kinds on Venice island and the mainland, all within 5-15 minutes. Info provided in the cottage.
• Waterfront dining nearby at Nokomo’s Sunset Hut, Pop’s Tropigrill, Dockside, Casey Key Fish House, Fin’s, Sharkey’s at the Pier, The Crow’s Nest, Nokomis Beach concessions
• Many "al fresco" outdoor dining opportunities in Downtown Venice
• 30-45 minutes north to downtown Sarasota for many fine dining and casual dining experiences
BEACHES
• Nokomis Beach @ Casey Key 2 mi; North Jetty Beach @ Casey Key 3 mi.
• Venice beach 3 mi.; Caspersen Beach 4.5 mi.
• Venice Fishing Pier and adjacent beach 4.5 mi.
• Venice Brohard “Dog Beach” 4.5 mi.
• Siesta Key Beach 15 mi. north (VERY crowded)
• Manasota Key Beach 15 mi. south
• Famous Nokomis drum circle every Wednesday and Saturday evenings, starting around 5:00 (may not be available during COVID, in which case they drum at the Nokomis Center Park, within walking distance of the cottage)
• Beach bazaar on Nokomis Beach the third Saturday of the month (may not be available during COVID)
• Rent kayaks, jet skis, and fish at Nokomis Beach
• Spot dolphins regularly, and manatees occasionally, at the Venice jetty at the south end of Casey Key
• Search for prehistoric shark’s teeth at Venice beaches, or hire a diving charter if you want to find the really BIG ones. Diving charter within walking distance of the cottage.
RECREATION
• The Legacy Bicycle Trail is just 2 blocks away. Ride or stroll to Caspersen Beach, Oscar Scherer State Park, cross trestles over scenic Shakett and Curry Creeks. Bring your own bikes, or rent some nearby.
• Fishing and diving charters, plus a bait and tackle shop within .5 mi
• Free public tennis courts at Nokomis Center Park, two blocks away
• Pickleball courts in nearby Venice and soon at Nokomis Center Park
• Tropical birdwatching at Venice jetties, along with the Rookery in Venice, and at local environmental preserves
• Oscar Scherer State Park 4.5 mi. north on US 41. Great place for natural FL beauty. Bike or go by car and walk trails. See alligators, birds, much more. Camping spaces available but fill up fast during peak season
SHOPPING
• Quick and easy access (1-3 miles) to three Publix supermarkets, along with an Aldi and a Winn Dixie.
• Farmer’s market in Venice each Saturday morning. Permanent indoor farmer’s market at Detwiler’s in Venice (3 mi.) Mon-Sat
• Many retail shops, boutiques, in nearby downtown Venice and on the mainland, within 1-5 miles
• Many local thrift and consignment stores with incredible deals. We will provide a list
• Monthly antiques fair at the Venice Mercado, third weekend of the month (may not be available during COVID)
• Monthly craft and antiques fair at Rum Runners Antiques next door on E. Pocono Trail. (may not be available during COVID)

It's important to have your own vehicle to get around to all the places you’ll want to go.
Parking here at Casa Nokomis is easy. You have a spot off street at the cottage, and there's room for guests to park on the street. Parking is free, as well as at Nokomis and Venice Beaches, and for two hours in downtown Venice. There is some limited free parking in downtown Sarasota, as well as in parking garages.
Location-wise, we are just several blocks from US 41 and about four miles from I-75. Access to both is very easy. The north bridge to Venice Island is just half a mile south. The closest airports are Venice Airport (private planes), Sarasota Airport (the closest; 23 miles), Punta Gorda Airport, Ft. Myers International Airport, St. Petersburg Airport, and Tampa Airport. Allegiant, Southwest (as of 2/1/21) and JetBlue fly in to Sarasota, as well as other major airlines. Sarasota airport is about a 35-45 minute drive, depending on traffic and the time of year.
My personal preference for a larger airport is Ft. Myers, the driving time is about the same as from Tampa, about 1.5 hours. But there is far less traffic. There are shuttle services and private cars that can take you to and from any of our airports.
Sarasota County has buses that stop on US 41 nearby, and Uber and Lyft drivers can take you places as well. There are no trains. Unfortunately, mass transit isn’t common in most of Florida.
