Unhappily, host never arrived, never replied to our messages or phone calls. Airbnb, when contacted by us, also reported host did not answer any, messages or phone calls, thus after several hours of waiting, we had to leave and look for another place. It was a sunny and hot day in Salvador, and we waited all that long with our dog in the car, very sad and frustrated, since we trusted this person as well as Airbnb, but again, the host accepted the request but did nothing after that. (Airbnb offered to pay for a snack while waiting during those hours, which we appreciated).

Great location just at the beach in a non tourist neighborhood. There a few options for restaurant, however during holidays many might be closed. The house is really spacious and nice with many beds, bathrooms and a wonderful terrace on the top. The only small issue is that there are no air conditioning in any of the bedrooms which makes sleeping a bit difficult during the warmest nights.

I spent six lovely nights with my wife, two children, and two elderly relatives at Alex's charming beachfront home in Ribeira. Alex made himself readily available before and during our stay, and we were greeted upon arrival by Rose, who took care of his house while he and his family were away. The house is very spacious. The first floor boasts a colourful front patio, a comfortable living room, a large dining table, a fully equipped kitchen and pantry (with washing machine), and a full bathroom. There is a vast backyard space as well complete with double garage, tree house, churrasqueira (bbq pit), and special area for their pet turtles. We were charmed instantly. The second floor has four bedrooms, three with bunk beds and one master bedroom with an in suite bathroom. There is also a second full bathroom to enjoy. The mezzanine floor offers a large space to do with seemingly as you please (we enjoyed the hammock quite a bit.) There is also a den space with a queen size wall bed that, although a bit hot, offers yet another sleeping option. There's even a half bathroom. The house, a well lived in, well appointed family home with toys and books galore, was precisely what we hoped for during our brief family stay in Ribeira. We were escaping the Canadian winter so didn't mind the heat (there is no air conditioning but a sea breeze is almost always present), but those sensitive to the heat would need to come prepared. It's also worth noting that the house is home to cats (they were elsewhere during our stay), so those with allergies will find it challenging. The neighbourhood (Ribeira) is one of my favorites in Salvador with a newly inaugurated waterfront boardwalk enjoying heavy pedestrian and cycling traffic daily. A grocery store and a couple of modest strip malls are close as is the must-visit Ribeira ice cream shop. Taxis and public buses are a short walk away. It is also a 15 minute walk from Bonfim, so we thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent Lavagem do Bonfim. Note, however, that this is not a neighbourhood with many tourists, so one should expect a tiny bit more (positive, unobtrusive) extra attention while visiting from abroad. Folks are extremely friendly and helpful, and there are many restaurants to enjoy Bahian food (and pizza). We highly recommend Alex's home to visitors looking for an authentic experience of everyday, mystical Salvador. Thanks Alex for opening up your home to us.
