Our second stay at this lovely place! We love it here, so peaceful yet accessible for local and walks. House is gorgeous with lots of space for all the family. Hosts are lovely and extremely accommodating. Thanks for having us again :)
This was a beautiful place to stay in a very nice village with numerous pubs and eateries. The cottage is extremely spacious and the owners have thought through what visitors might need during their stay. Communication with Tom and Anita were excellent and we could not thank them enough for providing a restful peaceful accommodation after a hard days walking. I would highly recommend this cottage
Absolutely beautiful property, beds were so comfortable, great kitchen and lovely sitting room. Was so perfect for our group and we will definitely stay here again on our next visit to the Lakes.
What an incredible house! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Ferryhill House and were so impressed with what a stunning home from home the owners have created. The house is extremely well equipped and beautifully decorated with some lovely features and touches, and the photos really do not do it justice! It suited our party of 4 adults and 2 children perfectly and was conveniently located with just a short walk to the train station and to a lovely local pub, The Wheatsheaf Inn. Anita greeted us on arrival and was extremely friendly and helpful. All in all, a wonderful stay which we could not fault at all!
The River Eden flows beside Wetheral village, and on the other side stands Corby Castle, a late Georgian mansion owned by the Howard family since the 17th century. The castle has a 14th century pele tower built in as a defence against against Border reivers.
Wetheral stands high on a bank overlooking a gorge in the River Eden. Parts of the riverbank here are surrounded by ancient woodlands, including Wetheral Woods, owned by the National Trust.
Just south of the church is Wetheral Priory Gatehouse, a Benedictine priory founded around 1100 by Ranulph de Meschines. Only the gatehouse remains of the priory, and this dates from the 15th century.
A short distance from the priory are the man-made caves constructed in the river bank. 40 feet above the River Eden, they were used by the monks as early as the 14th century as places of refuge during border warfare. Legend says these cells, excavated in the face of the rock, were made by Constantine, a younger son of a Scottish monarch. In 1843 a carved stone figure of St Constantine was placed opposite the cells.
Wetheral is located just off the M6 (c. 2.5 miles) between Junctions 42 and 43 providing easy access to the Lake District to the south/south west and Scotland to the north.
The village benefits from a railway station, just a few minutes walk from the property providing convenient access to Carlisle and Newcastle.
