July 9th, 2022: Day Two of our journey brought us into the heart of the Spirit Lake Dakota Indian Reservation, on the shores of Devil’s Lake, North Dakota. There we came to the historic Fort Totten, to lodge ourselves in beautifully-restored officers’ housing which now serves as a 10-bedroom inn where nearly every piece of furniture, every lamp, every rug, every picture, every sculpture, every book in the reading room, etc., is a historic artifact of some kind. The fort was built in 1862 to maintain law and order on the frontier, but after three decades was converted into a first-rate boarding school to provide free education to Indian boys and girls. Our caretakers at the inn were Mr. and Mrs. Olson, both of whom have deep roots in North Dakota, dating back to the first pioneers. Mr. Olson shared all kinds of interesting history, like how General Custer set out from Fort Totten on his way to the Battle of Little Bighorn. They were helpful in directing us to the nearby White Horse nature preserve, where we saw a herd of bison and climbed the hill for commanding views of the surrounding countryside. This was the most fascinating B&B I've ever stayed in.
