Varenna is for my opinion the best town around the lake;
it's a traditional italian village with magic and romantic atmosphere.
It's also the best if we are talking about location, with the train station really close to the centre that allows you to get from Milan very easily.
The dock for the ferries is literally in front of the apartment and from there you can discover every corner of the lake.. ( you can visit Bellagio during the day, reachable within 10 minutes by ferry)
There is also a place next to the apartment where you can rent a boat and sail around the lake by yourself (no driving licence needed!!)
In order to take ferries and discover the lake, You can easily download the timetables and also buy tickets to avoid the queue on the web site

From Milan Malpensa airport with Malpensa express train to Milan central station
From Milan station direct train to VARENNA-ESINO ( no need to reserve in advance)
The apartment is located a 5-minute walk from the station
If you arrive by car there is private covered parking nearby available for €20 per day (must be booked in advance with the host)
If you arrive by ferry, the apartment is located in front of the pier
