About: I am Lulzim Hupi a former mine worker in the infamous mines of Bulqiza. The tourism saved my life as it gave me hope that in the unknown Bulqiza there are opportunities to build a better future and contribute to the local community. At the beginning everyone would tell me “ You are crazy, no one will visit your shanty house, no one has a guesthouse in Bulqiza, why you” My mom would live in the village Lepurak in an old house which I always wanted to get rid of. While I would live in the city of Bulqiza and try to get a basic living by working in the mines. In an accidental way (I can tell you when we meet), some foreigners happened to visit my old mom's house. When they left the next day, they told me how beautiful and special the house was, how great the nature was and why I didn't turn that old house into a guesthouse for foreigners and tourists. My first thought was like " they are crazy, they are very crazy, who wants to come to Bulqiza” and I kept thinking “ even Albanians don’t know this place, no one will come to my old house”. Then the foreigners kept congratulating me for the delicious food and how tasty and fresh it was. I had never seen my mom’s food in that perspective, I have been eating that since I was a baby and it was just a normal food for me. At the end they left me some tips, I was surprised. For that amount I would have needed to work 1 month in the mines in order to earn it. I was amazed because I managed to earn that amount without risking my life and also by feeling a great pleasure of hosting and meeting people. That was the BIG MOMENT that changed my mindset and my life forever. After a lot of effort Kulla Hupi is a major destination in Bulqiza by hosting thousands of people around the world.
