The Red Barn provides a rural retreat, a quick 7-minute drive to vibrant Whanganui city. Local café and brewery down the road and close to the Windermere Berry Farm. A self-contained cottage set privately in the grounds of our property offering options for whatever break away you are looking for. Sit and relax outside in the sun, or stoke up the fire and chill out, or grab your bike and explore the country roads. The Red Barn has a wonderful warm sunny outlook. It is crafted from macrocarpa trees grown and milled on site. Sliding windows and french doors provide access to outdoor areas with rural views across the grounds. Cosy fire and heat pump for those cooler days or turn onto cool for those hot summer days and nights. Picturesque outdoor area with table and seating for four. Weber BBQ.

Sue and Stuart were wonderful hosts to us even when a tummy bug sent our plans a bit pear-shaped! We so appreciated Sue’s help. The ‘barn’ is lovely, clean and warm, the location is beautiful. Highly recommend a walk around the block of a morning. The pigs, the goat, the sheep and Ted the wee dog were all hilarious and fun. We loved it and highly recommend the Red Barn and its hosts.
We were originally only booked for 3 days but are so glad we extended it to 6. A great location in the country but only minutes from Wanganui. We loved all the animals and picking feijoas, guava berries and figs from the trees. Our hosts were always responsive and helpful when needed. We plan to stay here again on our next visit.
We had a wonderful stay at Red Barn. An amazingly beautiful location with wonderful hosts. My son loved feeding our food scraps to the cute pigs and my wife loved picking feijoas and figs straight off the trees. We loved it so much we have extended our stay from 3 days to 6!

Wonderful country lanes to amble, easy access off SHW 3, close to the vibrant arts scene of Whanganui. Amble the Saturday River Markets to hunt and gather your lunch or dinner supplies.
Great eateries, recommend you book a table at Maria Lane, or head down to Porridge Watsons after a cocktail at Franks.
Great launch location to explore the Whanganui River Road, Pipiriki and the Bridge to Nowhere.
The triangle trail of Bushy Park Historic home and bird sanctuary, a walk on spectacular Kai iwi beach and a lazy meander around Bason Botanical gardens will occupy a morning or afternoon. Recommend the Devonshire tea at Bushy Park (phone first).
Alternatively, grab your walking shoes/bike and head to Upokongaro, to Behind the Door on 4. Located on SHW4, best little roadside cafe and outdoor gardens.
So much to do.
There is parking for two vehicles, a lock up garage is available on request.
Additional parking for boat/trailer/camper can be arranged with owners.
