The view is incredible! We saw several whales! Leigh and Bruce gave us many recommendations and made reservations for us!
We absolutely loved Whale and Guppy Retreat! There were 12 of us -- a group of friends and family – and we were looking for a quiet and relaxing few days at the coast. We wanted a place with great oceanfront views, a hot tub, and good wifi. We also wanted a place with a nice kitchen, as some of us really like to cook. Bruce’s place delivered on all of this and more. The views are mind-blowing, and we just loved the attention to detail and little extras that really made this place feel cozy and special. Most of us are also “outdoor people”, so we really enjoyed the walks along the coastal trails and just awakening to the sound of the sea and the birds. Being in South Africa we of course also took advantage of the “braai’ and spent most of our time outside on the decks. Leigh (the manager) met us when we arrived, and she made us feel immediately at home. When traveling with a large group, I often find it difficult to find nice self-catering accommodation. Most places tend to be poorly furnished and designed for party people who could potentially trash the place. Bruce has a very strict no-party policy at his place – so if you are looking to party I would definitely not recommend his place. But if like us, you are looking for a quiet place to get away from it all with breathtaking views I would highly recommend Whale and Guppy Retreat.
I had stayed at both Whale Huys and Guppy Huys previously and absolutely loved it. The ocean views, the walks along the coast and the great restaurants in the area made it the perfect place to relax and recharge. So when a larger group of friends and I wanted to get away for a relaxing weekend Whale and Guppy Eco Retreat immediately came to mind. Some of us really enjoy cooking, and the kitchen and braai areas are great. I had been there previously in the winter months and it was great to see the whales and use the hot tub. This time we visited in the Autumn and were able to use the solar heated pool. And while we didn't see whales, we were lucky enough to see a pod of dolphins. The positioning of the houses means that all but one of the seven bedrooms has spectacular ocean views (we drew straws!), but as all the living spaces also have great views, this wasn't a big problem. Bruce and Leigh also had lots of great tips for things to do in the area as well as some excellent restaurant recommendations. There are still so many thing we want to explore that we will definitely be back!
De Kelders is one of the quietest and safest communities on the Whale Coast. The fishing town of Gansbaai is just seven minutes away with supermarkets, banks, a gym, and many cafes and restaurants. Stanford, a small town renowned for its quaint boutique restaurants is 10 minutes by car. For a larger variety of shops Hermanus is just 25 minutes away on the other side of the bay.
The area is rich in culture and things to do. Elim, a world heritage village, is 30 minutes away. Active adventures also abound, including wilderness and beachside horseback riding (African Horse Company is just 10 minutes away). South Africa's shark cage diving capital, Kleinbaai, is just 10 minutes away and now also features a penguin sanctuary. In fact, you can see all of the ‘Marine Big 5’ within a 15 minute radius of the villa, and most of them right from the villa.) A number of wine estates in the area offer some of the best red and white wines of South Africa including the Hemel en Aarde valley, the Stanford Valley, and Lomond wines. Wine tasting can be done six days, and in some places 7 days a week.
Having a car is quite useful for most excursions. However, the bakery at the end of Ingang Street (bright red building to the left) is less than a 10 minute walk. The hiking path along the coast (you can access this directly from the back gate) extends all the way from Gansbaai to Hermanus.

I have always loved traveling. Exploring new places, meeting new people and speaking new languages energizes me and enriches my perspective. So not surprising that I have lived and worked on four continents. Although I grew up in the US, I have lived in Amsterdam more or less continually for more than 25 years and it’s still my favourite city. I first visited Africa, and South Africa about 15 years ago, and like many people who visit South Africa, I was fascinated by the diversity and warmth of the people and the beauty of the natural environment. So it is perhaps not surprising that after ten years of annual visits, my partner and I took the step of buying a house there last year. Whale Huys was the first house we looked at, and while we visited many more after that, we both felt that this was right for us. The fabulous views from every room were of course the most amazing thing about the house, but we also very much liked the combination of a traditional and quaint thatch roof which keeps it cool even on the hottest of days, and panoramic sliding doors on the ocean side. The fact that it is located right on the Whale Coast less than 2 hours from Cape Town was also a major attraction for us. We love the sea in all its different moods, and it still amazes us that we see so many whales, dolphins, seals and other wildlife right from the living room window. On a practical note, the other thing that attracted us to the house is that it is in a quite safe area, where people are friendly and the pace is slow. Perfect for unwinding from our stressful European jobs. Our long-term plan is to retire in Whale Huys (at least part of the year) but in the meantime, we are eager to share our lovely villa and all it has to offer with people from other parts of South Africa and all over the world.
