CABIN #2 Science Camp, founded midcentury on the Alamosa River, is surrounded by national forest in the San Juans at 8600ft. We are off-grid and off the map. We are PACK IT IN (bring your own bedding, towels, flashlight, coolers & ice) & PACK IT OUT (take your trash). Heating is a wood stove. We provide hot water, a grill & cookstove, propane, firewood & emergency phone texting. —Contact us for more details or about our pet policy. Rental proceeds go to renovation of the historical site. The site was once the Phillips Univ. Science Camp, est. 1950. There are 20 historical cabins on the grounds undergoing preservation. The camp is a remote 20 acres bordering national forest on three sides. Your cabin has a living room with wood stove, a full kitchen and dining, a bathroom with hot water and shower, and an upstairs room with 1 queen bed and 3 twin beds. There is no cell service in the area. We do have emergency phone texting available. Bookings are for 2 nights minimum. Guests must plan ahead and bring their own bedding, towels, flashlights, and all supplies, including food, coolers, ice, and drinking water, and must take all trash with them when they check out. The closest stores are in Monte Vista, about 25 miles/45 minutes away. We provide only hot water, propane, firewood, an outdoor grill, an indoor cooktop, cooking pots, pans, and utensils, plates and cutlery, coffee and creamer, cooking oil, and salt and pepper. Everything you bring in must be packed out. This includes your own trash and recycling. Trash must remain bagged and indoors at all times, food must always be put away in cupboards and coolers, in order to avoid attracting bears, cougars, vermin, and scavengers.

We had such a wonderful stay! We left more relaxed than we had been in a long time. We watched the stars all night in the meadow behind the cabin and spent a lot of time in the river enjoying the rocks, clay, and calm. We actually slept for 12 hours our first night which we hadn't done in a long time! We found great hikes and great drives in a part of Colorado we hadn't explored, and felt it was a unique gem of a place that we wouldn't have expected with a spooky and fun history. Bring lots of lights, lanterns, and warm clothes, and a few scary stories will definitely add to the experience. We will definitely be staying here again, especially as the owners continue to build more of the cabins and experiences on site. Note: The road, especially if you continue on toward Jasper can be harrowing, but totally worth it. Bring 4 wheel drive if you have it, and definitely take the drive.

I will highly recommend this cabin to anyone who wants to unplug and still have running water and a shower! The location is fantastic and the cabin makes you feel like you stepped back into the late 60's or 70's. The cabin was well stocked similar to a home. Pots, pans, plates, and even had disposable plates and cups. There were books, games , and a history of the camp. Tom was fantastic and met me when I checked in. He told me about the surrounding things to see and do, and even loaned me a map.

This property is so beautiful, magical, and remote. The cabin is spacious and well stocked. Tom was super helpful and gave us a great introduction to the area and the cabin. There is a lot to explore near by. We brought a bike which made riding around the property really fun and fast. The small trading post was super cute! I bought a really cool treasure in there. The cabin is dark even in mid-day. We brought a bunch of battery string lights and tea lights and it made the space really fun and magical. The wood burning stove is SUPER nice. Our dog was in heaven here as well. we had a lot of privacy and a lot of space to explore. Perfect place to be intrigued and at peace. Thank you!

We are pure wilderness. Plan accordingly. To get here is a 15-mile drive on unpaved but graded roads. 4x4 not necessary.
We welcome nature lovers, biologists, botanists, ecologists, entomologists, mycologists, hermeticists, and esotericists!
Please follow our directions to the location since map apps usually are incorrect.
There's local hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, off-roading, mountaineering, snowshoeing, nordic skiing.
Trout at Science Camp reach about 14+ inches on the property. If you are looking for something larger, you'll probably have to head to the Conejos River, Treasure Creek, or other nearby local lakes.

A regular car can transport you around in the warm season on the main roads FDR 250, 255, FR 380, 330, and others. FDR 250, 255 are bumpy but graded and plowed. Winter driving requires a 4x4, or if you want to drive off the main roads. Most mountain passes here are around 10,500ft and are snow-covered well into the month of June. The South San Juans are the snowiest range in the lower 48. If you want to throw a snowball in August, all you have to do is hike up to 13,000ft!
We recommend the DeLorme Colorado topographic map, the National Geographic South San Juan Del Norte trails illustrated map, or you can print out GIS maps: search online for "Conejos County Colorado Parcel Viewer."
