The cottage is in a great location right on the sea front, and Rockcliffe is very quiet and peaceful location which was ideal for us! The team at Discover Scotland were very proactive and kept us up to speed and responded quickly. The cottage itself is a traditional seafront property and very spacious inside. We didn’t use all rooms as only two of us and our 2 JRs. There were a couple of very noticeable damp patches in 2 rooms, and we had a small leak from the ceiling of the living room bay window on the one day we had heavy rain. DS did forewarn us that a builder had been in the property to address a leak and kindly offered us a small discount. The rear garden was nice, particularly for our dogs to get some air and pee! One thing to note however is that the rear garden is shared with the neighbouring property so just be aware if you also have pets and how well they mix with other animals (we had one moment where 1 of our JRs got a little ‘overly friendly’ with neighbours dog). The driveway/parking space for the cottage takes a few manoeuvres to get into it but quickly got used to it. The main shared driveway to the 3 cottages is accessible via a gate from a small car park, and the sign at the gate states private access but this didn’t seem to stop people/tourists walking down the driveway to access the beach from the front of the cottages. We assumed they may have thought the driveway was a public footpath because most of them turned back upon realising it was a dead end once the last cottage is reached. Maybe the sign wasn’t clear enough or perhaps it was only aimed at vehicle drivers? No big issue, but easy to get territorial when renting a property! The property has three bathrooms, two upstairs with shower rooms one with bath and a downstairs toilet at the rear of the utility. The water pressure for the showers was a bit low and the flow light, but the option of a bath was good now and then. We lit the log burner on our last evening which was nice and capped off the charm and character of the property and location! Overall we enjoyed our stay. Some slight remedial repair is needed and was started in the property, only small things like a few cracks in the ceiling in several rooms, patches of filler and the damp patches et cetera and I guess a lot of that is the charm and character of the property. That said, you do have certain expectations when you spend over £1k for a week in a property of this kind, location rules! Lots of lovey walks around the area and high tide provides opportunity to walk all the way to the top end of Rough Island which our dogs really enjoyed!
The cottage makes a perfect base for family beach holidays, with walks through the near by wild flower meadows and woodland managed by the National Trust for Scotland. These walks take you over the hill to the “sister” village of Kippford which is a popular and busy sailing and water sports centre with two hotels and a tea room all making excellent stops for refreshments before you return home. Nearby, Colvend has a general store and tea room, more facilities can be found in ‘The Granite Town’ of Dalbeattie, 7 miles away.
The beautiful Solway Coast offers spectacular scenery and wildlife, with a bird sanctuary on Rough Island, accessible at low tide and the RSPB Reserve at Mersehead, a short drive away. Local leisure facilities include sailing in the neighbouring village of Kippford and golf courses at Colvend, Southerness, Kippford and Dalbeattie. ‘World-class’ mountain-biking opportunities (7 Stanes) and walks are popular in the nearby Dalbeattie forest.
Munro Cottage is the left side of the pair of semi detached cottages and the adjoining Albany Cottage can be taken so that larger groups may be together in one location.
