The cottage is just as lovely as the photos suggest, and a little bigger inside than you'd think. It's an amazing old cottage that's been refurbished by an architect, so it's undeniably a pretty cool and comfy place - although the shabby exposed floorboards upstairs and concrete floors downstairs might not meet everyone's idea of 'cosy'. Bottom line: over a cold and wet weekend, we were always warm. One slight hitch - the electrics popped due to one of the lights blowing, but we found and flipped the trip switch, and the owners have assured us they'll get it looked at. It is a bit noisy on the streets around the cottage, as it's in such a central location. On a rainy weekend in April it didn't affect us at all - not sure about mid-August, even with the complementary earplugs in both bedrooms. The bathroom is big and lovely, though (if we're nitpicking) the shower temperature and flow was inconsistent so could've been better. Ultimately, we loved our stay and would try to come back.
Lovely little cottage. As there were only two of us we used the bedroom at the back of the house that was lovely and quiet. There were plenty of restaurants and pubs/wine bars, galleries and shops to visit. Good walks both ways along the seafront. Good bus and train services for one way walks too.
Loved the smugglers cottage. So much character and such an amazing stay. In the heart of Margate and surrounded by everything at a stones throw. We will come back. Again and again!
Smuggler’s Cottage is so central, you walk out the front door and you’re right in the centre of Margate old town, a minute’s walk from the beach. The place is lovely, really well appointed for such a small cottage, really comfortable, with nice touches and decor. Couple of points to be aware of, the listing does state it can be noisy in the summer. We stayed in winter and on Saturday night it got a little loud at chucking out time, as you are right on the road near a few pubs! They do provide ear plugs. The living room window is right on the street. It has privacy film so people can’t see in during the day, but you can see right through at night, so make sure you put the blinds down! Finally, the listing states free on-street parking. While this is technically true, it’s only for an hour with no return. The nearest free parking options are a good 5 minute walk away (up hill). I’d park outside to unload, then find long-term parking after. Annoying, but a sacrifice for being so central.
