The communal cabin has a 3/4 bathroom, and a kitchen space with a stovetop, microwave, and toaster oven. Each site has a designated fridge space in the cabin. There is Wi-Fi , power and a smart TV if needed. A communal fire pit, sleeping bags, and liners are also available.
Our stay was EXCELLENT! <HOST> As many others have written, Ramy was such an incredible host. She's super communicative, flexible, accommodating, and just a wonderful person to interact with. She will provide you with pretty much all the information you need when you book (or reach out and ask her a question! She's super responsive). Just make sure you read everything thoroughly! <TREE TENT> This was our first time in a tree tent, and it was way bigger and more comfortable than we had expected. There was plenty of space to fit our family (2 adults and a 8lb dog) and our things (we packed pretty light: two knapsacks, a dog bag and another duffle bag). The site is less than a 5min walk from the communal cabin, and is a bit more secluded than the other two tents. The path down to the beach is not too long, but it's quite steep, so be ready for a climb on the way back! But the beach itself is pretty much a private beach (mostly rocky, not sandy). We woke up early to see the sunrise, and it was stellar! <CABIN> The communal cabin has a functioning kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, pots and pans, silverware, electric kettle, etc. It's also obviously powered, so you can charge your gadgets if necessary, and access wifi. It also has a clean, flushing bathroom and a hot shower, which is REALLY nice after a day of activities. <TIPS> 1. As someone else mentioned, I suggest bringing bug spray, as you'll have a lot of company while you're out there :-) 2. As Ramy will mention, bring food! You'll need to take home recyclables, so be sure to prepare accordingly. 3. During our visit, the credit card reader at the store was down, but we were able to pay using (V)enmo (Pay(pal) was also an option). 4. If the Dog Bar Bistro is open when you visit, I highly recommend you make a reservation with Ramy! Food was delicious and the atmosphere was very cute and homey. 5. The bicycles there are basically communal ones that you'll share. All of the ones we used were height adjustable. 6. We took the Island Express Charter, which was great! Just note that occupancy may vary between trips (we came in on a Friday morning, and there were only two other people, but our ride back on a Sunday afternoon was packed!) 7. Explore the island and enjoy the wonderfully unique rhythm and pace of life.
A perfect getaway, extremely relaxing to wake up in the tree tent with a view of the Sound. The communal cabin was well equipped for cooking and the shower was great! Nights by the fire with a glass of wine and star gazing was so nice…. The path to the beach was just steps away…. Decatur island was perfect for slowing down and relaxing or having an adventure. We recommend the golf course. Ramy was so lovely, the perfect host and was very responsive. So had so much fun!
I reserved a 3-day Decatur Isl Beach Retreat for my 11-year-old son and myself. Upon making the reservation, the host (Ramy) sent a very detailed description of how to get to Decatur (no ferry service) and some things to do while there. I’ll try to fill in the few gaps here. The island is an isolated community of about 70, probably closer to 40 full-timers. For nature lovers, it’s an enchanting place that is mostly undeveloped. No traffic noise, no sounds other than the birds and the waves lapping on the beach. All roads are gravel and well-maintained. There is a general store that’s open 3 hours per day, currently owned and operated by Ramy that has some basic provisions. I recommend bringing with you all food you’ll be eating, but the store is really cozy and has some nice wines. Ramy makes a great milkshake too, so it’s definitely worth checking out. Accommodations at the Beach Retreat are rustic, as described, but not as primitive as I’d prepared for. There is a small cabin near the tree tents that has a kitchen with pots/pans, silverware, dishes, range, refrig, toaster, microwave, and a few coffee-making options. There’s also a bathroom with a shower and a small living room. This is communal space to be shared with other campers, so no sleeping in the cabin. There are 3 tree tent sites that are quite private. The tents are suspended (by straps to trees) about 4 feet above ground. They comfortably sleep 3 full-sized humans. It’s much like a hammock experience, with mosquito netting and rain flaps. I removed the rain flap because the forecast was good and rain flaps make tents kind of musty. We used sleeping bags, foam pad insulation underneath, sleeping bag liners, and blankets on top. All of these were in the cabin; however, I recommend bringing your own sleeping bags, pillows, and under-bag insulation and use the cabin supplies for back up. The beach was accessible via a nicely-maintained pathway down an embankment. There were 3 kayaks available for use, along with paddles and life jackets that were inside a shed on the beach. The beach is walkable but rocky. The kayaks made navigation much easier. There are bikes, also rustic, available at the cabin, which were key for us. We used them to explore all over the island each day. These worked just fine for us, but if you are picky about your bikes, I’d recommend bringing gravel bikes or e-bikes. I don’t think there are specific limits for cargo on the water taxi, but I could be wrong. My son and I had a great time here. The accommodations were non-cushy but completely workable and accurately described by Ramy. Decatur is a treasure and this is an excellent base camp for exploring the island. I recommend it highly.
This stay was a very unique experience. Decatur is an amazing place if you want to get away from the crazy world we live in, or just experience some quiet beaches you can find yourself alone at. Ramy is helpful and quick to respond so feel free to ask about anything to help ensure a great stay. The cabin is communal and you are renting the tree tent which is a really cool experience. It rained out last night there and not a drop of water made it into the tent which we were really grateful for. Plus she provides lots of blankets, sleeping bags, and pillows for your comfort.
Decatur Island has a country feel! It is a rural and remote island that lacks street signs and has dirt roads. Many residents have unique or alternative modes of transportation. We approximately 60 full time residents with a few hundred folks who have holiday homes in the summer. The "Decatur 9" is a boutique par 5, 9 hole golf course on the water that is a treat for even the novice golfer. There is an old fashioned Country Store and Bistro, and a Saturday Market. Decatur has a one room schoolhouse with a playground, Library, and lots of Beachfront! Come and explore.
Decatur is 3.5 square miles, which allows for most of the island to be seen easily on foot or by bicycle. The islands main roads are approximately 1 mile from East to West. Golfing is not far. The Store is centrally located at almost a mile from your site. Beach is a 1-2 min walk. Hiking along the beach to the south end of the island is highly recommended! Take a picnic to explore the private beach at the Bird Sanctuary!
