Had it not been Golden Week when I planned my trip, I would have never have found this inn: all of the other accommodations within my price range across many prefectures were booked, so I took a chance and added Tottori to our itinerary as a stop on the way to Hiroshima. From the moment we stepped off the bus and began the ascent up the hill to the inn, I immediately felt welcomed. The innkeeper greeted us outside and went above and beyond in the true spirit of omotenashi throughout the entire stay. The instant I saw the room I knew I had to add another night there: It was a beautiful space with tatami mat flooring and futon beds, and a balcony mimicking the style of Mount Mitoku’s various temples. And speaking of the mountain, had it not been for the innkeeper mentioning the climb to us, we would have never even considered it as I knew very little about Tottori. The hike is not for the faint of heart and is a true test of mind and body, but the amazing vistas and views of Nageireido are incredibly rewarding. The optional vegetarian temple cuisine breakfast is simply not to be missed. The public bath is not my favorite concept, but as I was the only female staying there at the time, I felt perfectly comfortable. The only main issue I should mention is that Google Maps does not translate some of the bus stops correctly, which was very confusing: it seems to want to translate “Mitoku” as “Santoku” due to the kanji reading, but once I figured it out (with confirmation from the inn manager via inbox messages and the bus driver at Kurayoshi Station) it made sense. This was my fifth time visiting Japan, but even so, I was stepping out of my comfort zone when I decided to book a room here. If you’re having the same thoughts, go ahead and do it—you will not regret it! I will never forget this experience.

三仏寺投入堂に一番近い宿です。お寺の宿坊なのでホテルの設備を期待するのは筋違いですが、TVのない静かでゆったりとした時間が過ごせます。宿坊体験を求める外国の方々にオススメです。
