Welcome to "Tawarri," meaning Evening Breeze. As the owner of Tawarri, Top of the Town I pay my respects to the people of the Boandik Nation on whose land Tawarri is situated., Current Past and Emerging. Tawarri is located on the rim of the volcanic crater commonly known as The Blue Lake. The Aboriginal Dreamtime story of the formation of this crater is told and visually reconstructed in a wonderful Video presented to the Public at the Main Center, Riddoch Art Gallery Complex each day, free entry. The Mount Gambier Tourist Information Centre, on the Jubillee Highway is an excellent place to start your Tourist Adventures. Captain Grant sailed his small ship, the Lady Nelson from Adelaide, surveying the coastline in the early days of European arrival. The flat country made it easy for him to notice the 2 Volcanic peaks which he named Mount Gambier and Mount Schank. The Crater Lake, known as the Blue Lake is our most prominent attraction! You can walk, or drive around it , stopping at various look outs to enjoy the view and learn about the Geological changes which formed it. continue on to further explore the adjacent Valkey Lake. A lovely picnic spot , ideal playground and the chance to see wild life. The Sinkhole, known as Umpherston Cave Garden is also very well known. A lovely Park stroll , but a steep staircase down into the Garden. Feeding the possums there at dusk is fun!! An underground Cave , Englebrecht, is very interesting and gives us an understanding of how surface water over the millenniums has trickled through the soft limestone erosion and thus forming large caverns underground. when the soil above these caves collapse, they become visible, like Umpherston. The Central part of Mount Gambier is a pleasant place to wander, have a great coffee, shop, enjoy the Cave Garden, visit the Riddoch Main Center , wonderful Library which isn't just about borrowing books!! welcoming area for young kids. Lots to discover! I hope to provide our guests with a comfortable home base and encourage you to be well and truly out and about. Tawarri might offer 3 Teles! but fresh air and good companionship in touring takes first choice in my opinion!!
