Andrew is happy to show people most things that are going on, so if you or your children are interested to see what he's up to, just ask. There is plenty of space for lazing around or playing outside, and if you are looking for a game of boules or French cricket, there's also a lovely open grassed area set aside for play and relaxation. And if it rains... our cottage is designed to be home from home, perfect for hunkering down by the fire, whiling away the hours playing boardgames, or cooking up a storm in the well equipped kitchens.
As a family of five plus puppy we were delighted to find a stay in beautiful Dorset that suited us all for the Easter break. We were so pleased to be able to go on lots of lovely walks straight from our door including to the beach and around pretty Burton Bradstock (lunch at 3 horseshoes was a treat). Garden space and dog shower was a bonus! Comfy home with all amenities and a fabulous games room for a rainy afternoon. A real treat! As an extra show of kindness, a left-behind toy was returned to our youngest ❤️ Thank you Chrissie x
We just got back from a 1 week's stay in the Barn cottage. We were a family of 4 adults and 2 children (3 and 4 years old). The stay was overall enjoyable, and the accommodation was clean and secure. The furnishings suited young children and the garden was large enough for them to play. We did however have problems with the very small fridge with icebox. This was not large enough for our family's food and drink, plus it wasn't very cold. We informed the owners so hopefully, this will be replaced. The location is great but you wouldn't really know you were on a working farm. We didn't see many animals including chickens (also no eggs as we were told they weren't laying wherever they were) and the only farm activity on offer to the children was feeding the sheep which they didn't particularly enjoy....probably because we have done other farm stays where you can hand feed them and even cuddle the sheep. These sheep are young so you can't do that (they have sharp teeth) which left our children feeling disappointed. So even though we enjoyed our stay we didn't feel it was good value because we paid a lot of money for what we thought was farm experience too for our little ones. Highly recommend booking a Jurassic Safari nearby (Charminster) as it was the best fun even though it was raining that day! The farmer running it, Gary, is the most knowledgeable and loveliest person ever!
We are surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in the whole of England, an absolute treasure trove for walkers of all capabilities. And because a network of pathways cross our property, you can start exploring from your doorstep.
There's a wildlife trail leading from the farm to our local village of Burton Bradstock, only 10 minutes away. From there you can join the 560-mile long South Coastal Path, one of the great national trails in the UK. And this also means it's just 20 minutes walk from our back door to one of the highlights of the entire trail – the World Heritage Site of the Jurassic Coast. The beach at Burton Bradstock is Hive Beach with the infamous Hive Beach Cafe serving amazing seafood dishes throughout the day or teas/coffees and cakes. It was named one of the World's Five Best Fish Restaurants by the Daily Telegraph in 2012 and continues to win awards every year.
If you are walking some or all of the trail over several days we can also arrange to have your luggage forwarded on to your next stop.
We have maps and wellies in case you need them, and if you are really stuck, you can give us a call and we'll come and pick you up.
Once you are back at Graston, we offer drying facilities so you don't need to leave your wet wellies and clothes in your cottage or camp.
Take a stroll out the front gate and within 10 minutes you'll find Modbury Farm Shop. They have Angus beef and pork from their own Saddleback rare breed herds. Depending what's in season, there will be fresh farm vegetables too, along with a mouthwatering selection of ice-creams, fudges, cheeses, all from local farmers and producers. And in our local village of Burton Bradstock, the old post office has been turned into the Maydown Farm shop, with homemade cakes, as well as local meat, dairy and fresh produce.
There are also a couple of pubs in Burton Bradstock, each with its own charm. The Anchor Inn is a traditional village pub that specialises in seafood. The Three Horseshoes has more of a gastropub feel to it, with many of its ingredients sourced locally. And if you fancy pushing the boat out a bit, The Seaside Boarding House has wonderful views, with food and drink of a similar quality.
The small fishing/holiday town of West Bay is just a five minute drive away, with plenty of fresh local fish to eat and some great restaurants, including the Riverside Fish Restaurant, which prides itself on serving fresh, sustainably caught local fish and shellfish with a great view to match.
The nearest large town is Bridport - home to Palmers Brewery - the only thatched brewery in the UK. You can drink their range of local ales in many of the nearby pubs and restaurants. Drop into the brewery and you can also enjoy a tour. Bridport itself is a thriving market town with a street market every Wednesday and Saturday, along with several good independent shops.
Finally, there are some nationally famous eating places in the vicinity and easily accessible by car, such as Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage Canteen at Axminster, and Mark Hix’s Oyster House Restaurant, which overlooks the Cobb at Lyme Regis.
By Car
We are under 10 minutes from the A35 between Bournemouth and Exeter.
Cycling
The South Coast Cycle Route runs adjacent to the farm's boundaries, making us an ideal base for cyclists looking to explore this area or complete the route.
We also have easy access to the National Cycle Route 2, and various short circular rides coming off it.
The nearest train station is Dorchester (from London, Southeast and Southwest), or Maiden Newton (from Bristol and North).
The bus route that comes closest is the X53, going from Exeter to Poole. it stops one mile from the farm outside the Anchor pub (which is good place to sit, have a drink and wait for us to pick you up, if you don't fancy walking.)
