This is our second time at Thelma’s Dawn. It will not be our last. Christie has now become a friend and her place feels like home.
Christi is a national treasure and the world is a better place with her in it. The trip and experience far exceeded our expectations. While we were planning for a quick getaway from the city, Christi transformed it from a basic Airbnb stay to an entire unforgettable experience. Christi was extremely willing to share her knowledge about fishing and catching crabs, and made it easily accessible for us to do so, even though we had no prior experience. She was even willing to show us how to prep and eat them. Thelma's Dawn offers stunning sunsets, ample water activities, and the longest sand bank we've seen. Definitely don't forget your bug spray. Thelma's Dawn has set a very high bar for our future adventures and getaways. As a person who frequently travels with a dog, this place is the most dog friendly. We strongly recommend this place to any that are looking for a phenomenal beach experience that is off the beaten path. You'll have WiFi, but most likely no cellular service.
Our 3rd year visiting and it did not disappoint!! Host was very accommodating and responsive! Even took my kids fishing on a nearby dock and spent the evening there! We love having the golf cart and access to the kayaks and paddle board! Highly recommended if you’re looking for off the grid, low key and peaceful vacation!!! We enjoy this trip each year before the kids go back to school! Fun as always!!!

Christi was the best host we've had. She invited us to come a day before, just because the place was available, without extra cost. Although we arrived as scheduled, that was an extremely generous gesture. Christi and Rick were very generous and just great. She provided all the amenities we needed to enjoy our vacation, i.e., lots of kayaks, fishing poles, fishing baits, bonfire, which she had to monitor after we went to bed, beach umbrellas and floaters. Her kitchen was fully stocked, including cooking oil, tea, coffee, popcorns, spices, etc. All we needed to buy was fresh food and rice/potatoes/beans. This is pretty generous b/c most hosts provide the bare minimum. Christi and Rick made us feel at home. We felt like we were visiting family. She was great with our daughter, teaching her how to ride the golf cart, and just hanging out with her to give us a break. The place itself was very private, which made us feel like we were in a private island. We can't wait to go back.

I am a retired Paramedic and Lieutenant Firefighter for the City of Hampton, VA. I live with my husband, Rick, and our two parrots, Joey and Nikko. I am an outdoors lover and love to fish. We have bon-fires often and just enjoy the evenings and the sound of the waves as they crash along the shore line while looking at the stars above us. We have a fish pond in the yard, but these fish are just for admiring. I love to get around to talk to my neighbors and make sure they are all doing ok. I try to exercise as much as I can by walking on the beach and kayaking. There is a garden in the yard that Rick and I tend to. I love to can the vegetables for the Winter. So I have been asked how I came up with the name "THELMA'S DAWN". Well, my mother passed away from cancer in 2007. Mom was 68 years old when she was called home. I had a sister, Dawn, who was called home at age 28. She was murdered in January1988. It was fitting to name this beautiful place after the two of them. I have lived in this home since I was born, except for the 25 years I moved to Hampton, Virginia, in 1985, to take a job as a professional firefighter and went to school to become an Emergency Rescue Diver and Nationally Registered Paramedic. I was diagnosed in 1995 with Multiple Sclerosis, but continued to work in the fire department as an instructor of various Fire, Emergency Medical, Driving, CPR and Water Safety courses. I retired from the fire department in 2006 and moved back to the Eastern Shore, which I have always called my home! Having MS, I can not enjoy things the way I use to. I love the beach and the water, but due to MS, I cannot stay in the heat long. With this being said, I have felt that this property was being wasted, so I made the decision to renovate the attached garage into the apartment in the hopes that people could come and enjoy everything "Thelma's Dawn" offers! I have only been hosting since June 28, 2014. This is when I accepted my first family through Airbnb. It was a glorifying experience and Rick and I decided to continue. There have been many guests come to "Thelma's Dawn" and we have enjoyed them. We do have a motto here at "Thelma's Dawn". It is a NO DRAMA ZONE, yes, but we also live by these words "WHAT HAPPENS AT THE BEACH STAYS AT THE BEACH" There is a certain closeness that we have with most of our guests and we have built many lasting friendships that have continued to this day! I am positive that you will love it as much as I do! I look forward to meeting you soon!
