Athina was a wonderful host. the apartment was perfect for a few nights stay in Agia Roumeli while hiking the gorge.
We stayed here one night after hiking down Samaria Gorge. The room at Artemis hotel was very spacious and clean. Had two balconies and a view of the sea and mountains. Just a few steps from the beach and many great restaurants. Especially the Artemis Taverna, where we had the best meal after our hike. I definitely recommend staying here. Agia Roumeli was so beautiful and very peaceful especially after most of the trekkers leave on the ferry at 17:30. Next time I would stay more nights and just enjoy such a picturesque and relaxing place. Eva is a wonderful host and is the sweetest lady. She was very communicative and met us on arrival to show us the room. She and her family made our stay in Agia Roumeli a highlight of our honeymoon.
Agia Roumeli is a unique place. It has genuine Cretan heritage and a strong sense of character. It is a peaceful community, nestled between breathtakingly high and wild mountains and a long beach of fine pebble by the deep blue, crystal clear Libyan sea. The village is remote and near enough isolated; you can only reach it on foot or by boat, as there is no road. Agia Roumeli is situated in one of the wildest regions of Crete with rare flora, fauna and geology. Being the exit of the Samaria Gorge National Park, it offers magnificent walking and hiking trails through unspoilt and protected nature. The strong sun in combination with the salty sea and almost deserted beaches give you a unique sense of nurturing solitude. This spectacular setting is also an absolute antidote to any walker’s fatigue!
It is possible to spend weeks exploring this beautiful area. You can discover sheltered beaches where the mountains and the sea are your only companions, wander through the gorge or go hiking in the mountains. There are countless opportunities here for real and unparalleled nature experiences.
Gorgeous pristine beaches are hidden away by the mountains West of Agia Roumeli. Due to the cliffs, these beaches can only be reached by boat or strenuous hiking and are rarely visited by anyone. We can assist our guests with a boat trip, if the circumstances allow it.
Towards the East, one can walk along the shore, following a coastal path to the ancient Byzantine chapel of Agios Pavlos. This is the spot where St. Paul is said to have landed on Crete on his voyage to Greece. Further on, the path reaches the beach of Marmara, the village of Loutro and Hora Sfakion. This is approximately a 7 hour walk from Agia Roumeli. From Loutro and Hora Sfakion one can use the boat line in order to get back to Agia Roumeli.
Agia Roumeli is unique, since there is no road leading to the village due to the natural circumstances.
