Juri's house is the perfect escape into nature. It's on the edges of a sort of marsh area that lines the north part of the Baikal area. Not technically on Baikal, but water is not far away. You do have to drive to reach the lake itself. The house is simple, but has everything you need. I spent about a week with Juri and his young son, and it was very relaxing - sometimes we'd sit and chat and have some food or tea, we'd go swimming somewhere at least once a day, but they also respected my space when I wanted to be alone. For those who don't speak Russian, Juri is learning English and is able to converse and understand quite a lot. Though there's a small shop in the village nearby you can walk to, generally you have to go into town for groceries. However, Juri goes in several times a week, and it's no problem to accompany him. All in all, a really pleasant and quiet stay - just what I was looking for! Thanks Juri for everything, I hope we meet again.

The cottage sits at the edge of the great marshes beyond the northern shore of Baikal. Several minutes' drive from the Port Nizhneangarsk, it has a splendid view of the moutains, forests, the tranquil water, the meadow, waterfowls. We spent a wonderful time rowing on the boat borrowed from the host, twice or thrice. The fishing experience turned out to be unfruitful (made us a wooden fishing pole ourselves) perhaps due to too much waterweeds that exhausted the oxygen in the water for much fish to survive (strongly wishing the locals to import grass harp to make the water more lively...) It is possible to sail on a moterboat to the eastern shore of Baikal where there is hot spring, though (too obsessed and over-ambitious about fishing, and without swimming suits) we didn't go... At times the host drived us to Sevrobaikalsk (20 min drive from cottage, with Baikal on your left hand most of the way) to buy supplies--including fresh omul--and spent an hour or two on the beach there. Can have a good swim there in the cold lake water if you're Spartan enough, like Yuriy and his sons. He took us to a museum in the city, where books and video and souvenirs about Baikal were sold (a great regret we didn't buy more, it's much cheaper there than in duty frees). There's also forest hiking, to step on fluffy pine needles and walk through endless birches and mayhaps a little snow-melted streams. It's a pity that during our stay of 8 days there wasn't any notable rain, so mushroom/berry-picking didn't apply... Needless to say about sauna and barbecue that are most suitable activities there. There are fresh vegetables to pick in their garden (tomatos, cucumbers, marrow, parsely, leek...) Yuriy made a perfect host, guide, driver, cook... Though it'll be even more perfect if there's a refrigerator (being carnivores as we are...) and should the bed be larger (for a couple to sleep on). We are most grateful every time when he helped to carry the boat to the swamp which is by no means light stuff, when we lost our time in the market, shopping while he waited, and on lots of other occasions. We exchanged our choices of music, and Ruso/Chinese cooking recipes. Yuriy and his family availed us just the leisurely sort of holiday we desired, and there couldn't be a better place to taste the rural Russian life in Northern Baikal area, honest and simple.
