I will light the fire well in advance of your arrival, just give me a firm E.T.A Sawyer's Lodge is set in a beautiful bush landscape. This handcrafted high country style lodge is ideally suited for a couple or family with up to three young children. The lodge has been constructed to the highest modern standards using salvaged timbers which showcase the beauty of local Australian hardwoods. The lodge is off grid solar backed up with state of the art generator system. Sawyer's lodge was built using locally sourced salvaged timbers which were milled by my husband Ian. The lodge is off grid solar powered with a state of the art quiet generator. The atmosphere is cosy, comfortable with touches of luxury like alpaca quilts, pillows, quality linen and original sculpted artworks. The setting is amongst bushland close to the apple and nut orchards of Stanley. Sawyers is 15 minutes drive to Beechworth.
Unfortunately we had to cut our trip short due to a pretty non-existent internet (was a working holiday) but it you are looking to just switch off and relax, then this is a nice place to do it.
This house is fantastic for a weekend getaway. Beautifully built & positioned in the bush. . We loved the outdoor deck to sit out & have breakfast & glass of wine in the evening. Perfect for a family of 4 plus dog. Kids & dogs were able to run free in the bush, great trails for mountain bike riding & running. Close to the orchards to stock up on fresh fruit & nuts. Ian was a great host always available by phone to answer our queries.
We cycled from Beechworth, which was a challenge on a cold windy November day, but knowing Ian had been to the cabin and lit the logfire made the trip easier. We stayed for 4 nights, and brought provisions from town in our panniers including wine (of course), local cheeses etc. We kept the fire going for the entire time because it was cold, but were able to sit outside on the deck once or twice for lunch or coffee. The kitchen is well set up, with gas burners, frypan and cooking pots, & nice wine glasses. There is no microwave as the cabin is off-grid. Small but very adequate fridge and freezer. We had expected ground coffee to use in the plunger (there was none - but there was a variety of teabags), and no milk unfortunately - I'd expect both milk and ground coffee for $290 per night . Also there was no oil for cooking which I'd been expecting from the photos on the website (there was a bottle but it was empty). We used butter instead for the first night). The local fruit store (On Farm Fruit Supplies, 9am-5pm 7 days a week) is within walking distance and sells frozen berries, fresh pears and apples, apple juice and walnuts at this time of year - we bought the lot and enjoyed them during our stay. Bed is super comfy - nice white linen, beautiful view at night to the sky and stars and trees in the morning/afternoon. The bedroom area would benefit from bedside lights, and the lounge are would benefit from a standard lamp or equivalent for reading, as the lounge are is quite dark when you sit by the fire. Very comfy lounge settee and chairs. One other addition that would be appreciated by guests is a basket of slippers, as the website asks guests not to wear shoes indoors, on the wooden floor - but its cold in the loo and toilet, and the kitchen in your socks! If you are a couple, the space is fine - I don't think it would be so easy to accommodate a family with 2 children indoors for a weekend if the weather was cold/raining. The kitchen supplies/crockery might also be limited for a group of 4. We enjoy bird watching, and spent many hours in the forest, and went on two long walks along forestry trails, after seeking advice from the fruit shop owner. He sensibly told us to beware getting lost on the trails, but gave clear instructions about where to walk. Maps - including locally drawn maps - or forestry maps - in the cabin would have been appreciated. There was no written information about walks or local things to do - there was mention on the website about an ipad with this type of detail but we did not find the ipad. The circular forestry walk up Musgrove Rd, behind the property had lots of interesting trees, birds etc - we came across a wombat skeleton and mandible. That walk took about 3-4 hours. The other longer walk across the road from Sawyers, up Bald Hills West Road takes less time (about 1-2 hours). We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 day stay. The nightly rate of $290 is warranted if basics like milk, coffee, cooking oil are supplied, and local maps showing the walks nearby, and a few additions like improved reading lights and slippers to make the cabin a 'luxury' stay
This is a great, simple yet luxurious getaway for a couple or a small family. We stayed three nights with our two dogs and loved it. Really quiet and relaxing, but within easy reach or town if you need it. The woodfire was amazing and the house had most of the amenities you would need. Check in was easy and Ian had some great recommendations for local walks and entertainment options. Have recommended this listing to friends.
A beautifully designed rustic lodge in a picturesque location surrounded by bush land and orchards. Super comfortable bed and a lovely open fire. Nice kitchen with gas stove and oven. Ian was very friendly and gave us some great tips on arrival about local wineries and walks. Be sure to check out the stars on a clear night - it's quite isolated so there is no light pollution!
Stanley is known for its beautiful landscape of fruit and nut orchards and deciduous trees that line the roads making it picturesque for many months of the year.
